A moderator facilitates, reviews, and guides a discussion or debate and related interactions to ensure all shared content is appropriate and follows community rules. You can find moderators in a variety of industries and contexts online or at events. Social media moderators, community moderators, discussion/debate moderators, and health care moderators all handle the responsibilities to create a space for positive and safe interaction. As a moderator, your duties involve providing discussion topics, encouraging participants to share, removing unrelated or inappropriate content, answering questions, defining group boundaries and rules, and updating the platform. You also have the authority to decide what information is approved or removed.
| Aspect | Moderator | Content Reviewer |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Role | Manage and oversee online discussions, enforce community guidelines, facilitate engagement | Review and evaluate content for compliance, quality, and appropriateness |
| Work Environment | Online platforms, social media, forums | Content management systems, review platforms |
| Required Skills | Communication, conflict resolution, community management | Attention to detail, knowledge of policies, content assessment |
| Common Usage | Social media, forums, live chats | Content platforms, publishing sites |
While both roles involve reviewing online content, Moderators focus on managing community interactions and enforcing rules, whereas Content Reviewers primarily evaluate content for compliance and quality before publication or posting.

The Aspen Institute is a global nonprofit organization committed to realizing a free, just, and equitable society. Since its founding in 1949, the Institute has been driving change through dialogue, leadership, and action to help solve the most critical challenges facing communities in the United States and around the world. Headquartered in Washington, DC, the Institute has a campus in Aspen, Colorado, and an international network of partners.
The Aspen Institute’s Center for Rising Generations (CRG) is dedicated to ensuring that civil dialogue, civic engagement, and leadership development become a predictable part of the journey to adulthood in our society and around the world. Inspired by the Aspen Institute’s strategic plan and supported by a generous endowment from the Bezos Family Foundation, the Center for Rising Generations:
CRG supports placing early career professionals in high-responsibility positions throughout the Aspen Institute to create opportunities for career growth and to ensure youth voice is reflected across the Institute.
SPORTS & SOCIETYThe mission of the Sports & Society Program is to convene leaders, facilitate dialogue, and inspire solutions that help sport serve the public interest. Since 2011, we have provided an essential venue to explore the impact of sports on the world in which we live, think through major trends, and develop shared strategies that can help sport live up to its potential as a force for good.
Much of our work to date has been on the base of our sport ecosystem, youth and school sports, the foundation upon which everything else sits – college, professional and recreational sports – and the key to building healthy communities. We connect silos across a disjointed landscape, from leagues to local providers, foundations to policymakers, driving change through roundtables, research, and award-winning content.
ABOUT THIS ROLEIn partnership with the Center for Rising Generations, the Aspen Institute’s Sports & Society program is launching an innovative program that will provide leadership development to high school athletic team captains across the country. Building on the Aspen Institute’s deep history of nurturing leadership through seminars, the Captains Leadership Academy will provide training to high school team captains that serve in communities across the country. During its first year, we anticipate working in a few select communities with plans to expand the program nationally in the coming years.
The salary for this opportunity is $65,000. This term-limited position is set to begin April 20th, 2026, and will end April 23, 2027. The expectation is for this position to work out of the Washington D.C. office at least three days a week (Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday).
WHAT YOU WILL DOThe CRG Associate for the Sports & Society program will be the project lead for the Captains Leadership Academy during its launch and pilot year. This complex project will include multiple strands of work. The Associate will be responsible for coordinating and monitoring each of these strands and reporting to their manager when the project is not on track for success.
The Associate may have opportunities to participate in other projects and will be expected to contribute to program priorities.
WHAT YOU WILL NEED TO THRIVEThrough this one-year experience the CRG Associate will:
