What is a modeling and simulation engineer?

Modeling and Simulation Engineers are professionals who use mathematical models and computer simulations to analyze complex systems and predict their behavior. They work in various industries, including aerospace, defense, healthcare, and manufacturing, to improve product design, optimize processes, and support decision-making. Their work often involves creating virtual prototypes, running simulations to test different scenarios, and interpreting results to provide insights for engineering projects. These engineers typically have strong backgrounds in mathematics, physics, and computer science.

What are some common challenges a modeling and simulation engineer faces when integrating new models into existing systems?

A common challenge for Modeling and Simulation Engineers is ensuring that new models are compatible with existing simulation frameworks and data sources. This often involves resolving discrepancies in data formats, model fidelity, and simulation timing, as well as validating that the integrated system produces accurate and reliable results. Collaboration with software developers, data analysts, and subject matter experts is essential to troubleshoot integration issues and maintain system performance. Effective communication and thorough documentation are key to overcoming these integration hurdles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a modeling and simulation engineer?

To thrive as a Modeling and Simulation Engineer, you need a strong background in mathematics, physics, computer science, and engineering principles, typically supported by a relevant degree. Proficiency with simulation software (such as MATLAB, Simulink, or ANSYS), programming languages (like Python or C++), and sometimes certifications in modeling tools are highly valued. Analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication are essential soft skills for translating complex systems into accurate models and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams. These skills are crucial for ensuring the accuracy, reliability, and usability of simulations that inform critical engineering decisions.

What is the difference between Modeling And Simulation Engineer vs Systems Engineer?

Job description

The group is seeking a Systems Modeling, Simulation and Analysis Engineer to assist in
developing our existing codebases for physics and electronic warfare modelling. These Matlab
codebases allow for modelling of sensors, weapons, and electronic warfare capabilities. The
engineer will work with the team to understand the features that need to be added to the existing
models and the analysis goals. The engineer would leverage their engineering/physics technical
background to understand how to model the desired features and capabilities and implement
them efficiently in the existing codebase. In addition, the engineer would be expected to further
improve the quality of the existing codebase in accordance with software engineering best
practices, and effectively perform analysis runs using the codebase.
Responsibilities include but not limited to:
โ€ข Independently adding features and capabilities to the existing Matlab codebase, including
the technical background to accurately model basic physics phenomenology in terms of
RF propagation, electronic warfare, missile flyouts, sensors etc.
โ€ข Performing quality control on new features and the existing code base to include adding
unit tests, and other capabilities to ensure that the results are accurate and that new
features are interacting appropriately with the rest of the codebase.
โ€ข Working with the team to understand what new features are required in the codebase to
support analysis
โ€ข In consultation with the team, taking responsibility for overall software architecture and
quality control of the codebase, including how new features should best be added.
โ€ข Performing modeling runs needed for analysis and building tools that allow for efficient
batch runs and analysis of results.
Required Skills:
โ€ข Data Analysis Tool Development using MATLAB
โ€ข Modeling & Simulation
โ€ข Software Development
โ€ข Matlab Programming
โ€ข Software Architecture
Desired Skills:
โ€ข Active and Passing RF Sensing; Threat Modeling; Platform Dynamics
โ€ข Modeling Sensing Technologies (radar and optical sensors)
โ€ข RF Signals (Antennas, EM Propagation and Modeling, Down-Conversion Receivers)
โ€ข Classified Software Development
โ€ข Aircraft, Missile, Satellite Systems
โ€ข Air Surveillance Systems (e.g. radars)
โ€ข Command and Control (C2) Systems
Period of Performance:
Two year contract with the possibility of being extended based on budget/work availability and
performance.
Clearance:
Candidates must have an active secret clearance to be considered for this position.
Work Location: Onsite - Candidate should expect to be onsite 5 days a week.
