Model Systems Engineering information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Model Systems Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Model Systems Engineer, you need a strong background in systems engineering principles, mathematical modeling, and often a relevant degree in engineering or computer science. Familiarity with modeling tools like MATLAB/Simulink, SysML, and simulation software, as well as knowledge of systems engineering standards such as INCOSE certification, is typically required. Critical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills set standout professionals apart in this field. These competencies ensure accurate system representations, effective collaboration, and successful project outcomes in complex engineering environments.

What is the difference between Model Systems Engineering vs Systems Engineer?

AspectModel Systems EngineeringSystems Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's or higher in engineering, certifications in systems modeling (e.g., INCOSE)Bachelor's or higher in engineering or related field, certifications vary
Work EnvironmentDesign and develop system models, simulations, and architectureDesign, analyze, and optimize complex systems in various industries
Employer & Industry UsagePrimarily in aerospace, defense, and systems integration firmsWidely across technology, manufacturing, aerospace, and defense sectors

Model Systems Engineering focuses on creating detailed system models and simulations to analyze system behavior, while Systems Engineers oversee the entire system lifecycle, ensuring integration and functionality. Both roles require similar credentials but differ in scope and daily tasks.

How does a Model Systems Engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a project's lifecycle?

As a Model Systems Engineer, you will frequently work alongside software developers, hardware engineers, project managers, and quality assurance specialists to ensure that system models accurately reflect project requirements and constraints. Collaboration often involves participating in design reviews, integrating feedback, and updating system models to accommodate changes in project scope. Effective communication and the ability to translate technical details between different teams are crucial, as your models serve as the foundation for development and decision-making throughout the project. This collaborative environment fosters both technical and interpersonal growth, allowing you to develop a holistic understanding of complex systems.

What is Model Systems Engineering?

Model Systems Engineering is an interdisciplinary approach that uses models to support the design, analysis, and management of complex engineering systems. It involves creating abstract representations (models) of systems to better understand their behavior, requirements, and interactions throughout the system's lifecycle. This approach helps engineers identify potential problems early, optimize system performance, and ensure that the final product meets its intended goals. Model Systems Engineering is widely used in industries such as aerospace, automotive, defense, and software engineering.

Job description

Role can be Hybrid, TBD

The Systems Engineer should have experience architecting systems, working across the Systems Engineering Lifecycle, and in Digital Engineering/Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) achieving architectural integrity and traceability through requirements analysis, system and software development and production system deployment.

This position offers the opportunity to work with leading domain experts in sensors development and cyber security and will incorporate MBSE tools and techniques. The ideal candidate will be well-versed in Systems Engineering techniques, Modeling and Simulation, and Digital Engineering/MBSE and be excited about opportunities to mentor more junior staff and help foster growth of subject matter expertise across the organization.

In addition to modeling in SysML, the Systems Engineer will be responsible for implementing customization and automation techniques offered by Cameo to enable multi-disciplinary programs to comply with DoD Digital Engineering goals. Proficiency in one or more high-level language (C/C++, Java, Python) is highly desired. Experience connecting SysML models with DoD simulation frameworks such as AFSIM is ideal.

The Systems Engineer should have experience implementing a rigorous MBSE approach to develop DoD systems. New programs will be looking to adopt agile approaches that incorporate model-based requirements management and traceability with software development.
This position is well suited for a Systems Engineer with a software development background who is interested in improving the state of the practice and demonstrating the advantages that MBSE can offer.

What you will do:

  • Leading development programs through the Systems Engineering process using MBSE approaches that support DoD Digital Engineering goals
  • Implementing rigorous MBSE approaches using SysML in Cameo (MagicDraw)
  • Providing mentorship and training of Systems Engineers on the use of MBSE
  • Working closely with domain experts and software development teams to realize program designs and digital engineering goals
  • Implementing traceability between MBSE model content and domain-specific analysis tools and simulation

Who you are:

  • This position requires an Active DoD Secret Clearance with the ability to obtain a Top Secret (TS) Security Clearance, for which U.S. citizenship is needed by U.S. Government
  • BS, MS or PhD in Systems Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related technical field
  • Minimum of 2 years experience working with SysML models in Cameo
  • (or similar tool)
  • Experience working with software-intensive systems and open architecture

Nice to haves:

  • Active Top Secret Security Clearance
  • 5+ years’ experience in architecting systems using system modeling tools
  • Technical Project Lead experience
  • Domain expertise in one or more of the following areas is desirable; Radar, Electronic Warfare, Acoustic, Antenna Apertures, Sensor Resource Management, Sea/Air/Space, Large-Scale Platform Test Systems, Cyber Physical Systems, Open System Architectures (UCI, OMS, COARPS)
  • Proficiency in Java, C/C++ or Python
  • Agile software development experience
  • Familiarity with specific government open architectures (e.g., Open Mission Systems)
  • Experience with the Advanced Framework for Simulation, Integration and Modeling (AFSIM)
