Model Photo Shoot information

What is a model photo shoot?

A Model Photo Shoot job involves posing for professional photographers to create images for fashion, advertising, portfolios, or artistic projects. Models work with stylists, makeup artists, and directors to achieve the desired look and feel of the shoot. Shoots can take place in studios or various locations, depending on the project. The job requires confidence, adaptability, and the ability to take direction well.

What should I expect during a typical day on set for a model photo shoot?

A typical day on set for a model photo shoot often starts with hair, makeup, and wardrobe preparation before moving on to a series of poses or scenes directed by the photographer and creative team. You can expect to collaborate with stylists, makeup artists, and art directors to achieve the desired look and mood for the shoot. The pace can be fast, requiring you to quickly adapt to different outfits, settings, and instructions. Attention to detail, professionalism, and the ability to maintain energy throughout the day are key for success. Working on set also provides valuable networking opportunities with industry professionals that can lead to future assignments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the model photo shoot position, and why are they important?

To thrive in a Model Photo Shoot role, you need strong posing techniques, an understanding of lighting and camera angles, and often some prior modeling experience or training. Familiarity with photo shoot settings, wardrobe management tools, and sometimes agency casting platforms is helpful. Confidence, adaptability, and the ability to take creative direction are standout soft skills for this position. These abilities ensure models work efficiently with photographers and creative teams to deliver high-quality images that meet client or brand expectations.

Can I model with no experience?

Model photo shoots often accept beginners with little or no experience, especially for test shoots or portfolio building. Having a good attitude, basic understanding of posing, and a professional appearance can help you get started, but some agencies or clients may prefer models with prior experience or a portfolio. Training or coaching can improve your skills and increase opportunities in the industry.

How to become a model photo shoot?

To become a model for photo shoots, individuals typically build a portfolio showcasing their appearance and versatility, often through professional photos or test shoots. They may seek representation from modeling agencies, develop relevant skills such as posing and runway walking, and maintain a healthy appearance to meet industry standards. Consistent networking and presence on social media can also help attract opportunities in the industry.

Job description

MONO is an advertising and branding agency formed to create magnetic brands that draw people in. We aim to create legendary work that works for our clients, within a working environment that is optimistic, collaborative, and team-based—because the best ideas come from people who love making them together.

MONO is seeking a Creative Art Director—a hybrid talent with an eye for art direction and a social-forward mindset. You bring a clear point of view, conceptual thinking, and the craft to communicate visual direction with confidence, all while staying ahead of what's new, what's old, and what's overdone. You know the rules of art direction well enough to break them, you move fast without sacrificing polish, and you're just as comfortable pitching a big idea as you are shooting and editing a quick-turn piece of content yourself.

  • Partner with copywriters, designers, and strategists to concept organic and paid social campaigns, static posts, stories, video mocks, and traditional campaign work
  • Create and execute innovative ideas for our clients — from ideation and concepting to layout design, pitch decks, and client presentations
  • Build shot lists, assist on photo/video shoots, and produce fast-moving, lo-fi to high-production social content
  • Shoot and edit quick-turn content yourself when needed, using whatever tools fit the job
  • Prepare final design files, manage resizing across social dimensions, and maintain brand guidelines
  • Collaborate with Creative Leadership to translate brand objectives into concepts and content, and share insights on platform and creator-culture trends
  • Incorporate feedback from Creative Leadership, teammates, and clients with precision and a positive attitude

  • 2–3 years of experience in art direction, graphic design, or social-first content creation, ideally at an advertising or marketing agency
  • Strong fundamentals in art direction and conceptual thinking, with a portfolio showing both concepting and hands-on social execution
  • Ability to produce an idea, shoot it, and edit it into a finished asset under tight timelines
  • Deep familiarity with the native aesthetics and best practices of Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, and X
  • Understanding of how content supports brand building, campaign goals, and business objectives
  • Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite, with working knowledge of Canva and/or Figma
  • Strong time management and organization, with the ability to multitask against tight deadlines
  • A collaborative, curious, solution-oriented mindset that embodies MONO's values

This is a locally-based role, where relocation will be required for candidates living outside of the Minneapolis/St. Paul area. We currently observe a hybrid work model. We work onsite every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday for Work From MONO (WFM) days, in addition to moments that matter outside of those designated days, with the purpose of fostering agency connection and aiding collaboration. Some travel may be required.

Our company offers flexible paid time off, medical, dental, vision and well-being benefits, HSA, FSAs, pre-tax commuter benefits, 401k with match, and upgraded parental leave policies. We also close the office over the week of the 4th of July for a perk we call Mid Summer’s Dream. Mid Summer’s Dream is an opportunity for everyone here at MONO to re-charge, spend time with family, or just plain dream (and, in MN, July is the perfect time to be OOO). We are a values-driven company, supporting people personally and professionally.

MONO is committed to creating an inclusive environment and is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, and other protected status as required by law.
