What is the difference between Model Based System Engineer vs Systems Engineer?

AspectModel Based System EngineerSystems Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires systems engineering certifications, knowledge of modeling toolsOften holds a bachelor's or master's in engineering, with certifications like INCOSE
Work EnvironmentFocuses on system modeling, simulation, and design using specialized toolsInvolves system integration, testing, and requirements management
Industry UsageCommon in aerospace, defense, automotive, and complex systems industriesWidely used across IT, manufacturing, and engineering sectors

While both roles require strong engineering backgrounds, Model Based System Engineers specialize in creating and analyzing system models to optimize design, whereas Systems Engineers focus on integrating and managing entire systems throughout their lifecycle.

What is a Model Based System Engineer?

A Model Based System Engineer (MBSE) is a professional who uses modeling techniques and tools to design, analyze, and manage complex systems throughout their lifecycle. Instead of relying solely on traditional document-based methods, MBSE professionals create digital models that represent the structure, behavior, and requirements of systems. This approach helps improve understanding, communication, and traceability among stakeholders, leading to more efficient and reliable system development. MBSE is commonly used in industries like aerospace, automotive, defense, and healthcare to manage complex engineering projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Model Based System Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Model Based System Engineer, you need a solid background in systems engineering principles, requirements analysis, and modeling languages like SysML, often supported by a degree in engineering or computer science. Proficiency with modeling tools such as IBM Rhapsody, MagicDraw, or MATLAB/Simulink, and familiarity with systems engineering standards like INCOSE certification, are typically required. Strong analytical thinking, effective communication, and problem-solving abilities are key soft skills in this role. These skills ensure efficient system design, clear stakeholder communication, and successful integration of complex systems in multidisciplinary environments.

How does a Model Based System Engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a project lifecycle?

Model Based System Engineers work closely with multidisciplinary teams, including software developers, hardware engineers, and project managers, to ensure system models accurately reflect requirements and constraints. They often facilitate communication by translating complex system behaviors into visual models that are easily understood by all stakeholders. Throughout the project lifecycle, they participate in design reviews, update models based on team feedback, and help validate that the final system meets its intended functionality. This collaborative approach helps reduce misunderstandings and streamlines the integration of various subsystems.

Job description

Solvarus Consulting is dedicated to solving the toughest challenges facing the Intelligence Community and Department of Defense. Join our team of experienced engineers in the development and institutionalization of a Digital Engineering environment set to confront these challenges. As a Solvarus team member, you will work closely as part of multiple Integrated Product Teams (IPTs) to architect and design Space and Ground solutions using advanced Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) processes and techniques. These solutions will be related to space-to-space as well as ground-to-space communication, processing and command & control. You will work with SIGINT and GEOINT subject matter experts to craft MBSE mission-based models. You will be on the team leading the adoption of MBSE in the Intelligence Community. Solvarus also provides team members training towards Object Certified Systems Modeler Professional (OCSMP) certification.
Responsibilities:
  • Create engineering artifacts and develop models of mission systems using a MBSE tool suite that includes NoMagic Cameo EA, Rhapsody, Sparx EA as well as other systems engineering tools.
  • Define the appropriate data standards, data structures, and supporting COTS, GOTS, and Open-Source technologies required to manage the data needs.
  • Integrate enterprise tools and develop MBSE-based processes to support requirements engineering, the customer's ERB process, CONOPS and architecture development, Risk, Issues and Opportunity Management boards, schedule management, test and verification strategy development, and system integration of new initiatives in support of expanded mission capabilities.
  • Facilitate collaboration between the MBSE users and the tool development team to communicate modeling needs and help innovate potential solutions.
  • Provide technical advice and guidance to senior managers regarding the creation and implementation of new MBSE methods and techniques.

Required Skills:
  • Requires 0 to 5 years with BS/BA or 2 to 3 years with MS/MA
  • Must have a current and active TS/SCI with CI Polygraph.
  • BS in Engineering, Systems Engineeing, Aeronautical Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, or related STEM degree.
  • Should possess the skills and/or the desire to learn the skills necessary to use industry MBSE tools and modeling methodologies to successfully produce systems engineering models, such as NoMagic Cameo. Experience with systems engineering processes in support of system development life cycle development is a plus.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and/or the desire to learn practical application of UML / SysML modeling languages and experience applying this common structure to an MBSE solution.
  • Entry level knowledge of architecture, requirements engineering, CONOPS development, verification, test, and system integration to accommodate End to End Systems Engineering.
  • Strong communication skills especially with tools developers and customers.

Desired Skills:
  • Knowledge or demonstrated experience with DoDAF, UPDM and/or UAF
  • Object Certified Systems Modeler Professional (OCSMP) certification
