What is a model based system engineer?

A Model Based System Engineer (MBSE) is a professional who uses modeling techniques and tools to design, analyze, and manage complex systems throughout their lifecycle. Instead of relying solely on traditional document-based methods, MBSE professionals create digital models that represent the structure, behavior, and requirements of systems. This approach helps improve understanding, communication, and traceability among stakeholders, leading to more efficient and reliable system development. MBSE is commonly used in industries like aerospace, automotive, defense, and healthcare to manage complex engineering projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a model based system engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Model Based System Engineer, you need a solid background in systems engineering principles, requirements analysis, and modeling languages like SysML, often supported by a degree in engineering or computer science. Proficiency with modeling tools such as IBM Rhapsody, MagicDraw, or MATLAB/Simulink, and familiarity with systems engineering standards like INCOSE certification, are typically required. Strong analytical thinking, effective communication, and problem-solving abilities are key soft skills in this role. These skills ensure efficient system design, clear stakeholder communication, and successful integration of complex systems in multidisciplinary environments.

How does a model based system engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a project lifecycle?

Model Based System Engineers work closely with multidisciplinary teams, including software developers, hardware engineers, and project managers, to ensure system models accurately reflect requirements and constraints. They often facilitate communication by translating complex system behaviors into visual models that are easily understood by all stakeholders. Throughout the project lifecycle, they participate in design reviews, update models based on team feedback, and help validate that the final system meets its intended functionality. This collaborative approach helps reduce misunderstandings and streamlines the integration of various subsystems.

What is the difference between Model Based System Engineer vs Systems Engineer?

AspectModel Based System EngineerSystems Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires systems engineering certifications, knowledge of modeling toolsOften holds a bachelor's or master's in engineering, with certifications like INCOSE
Work EnvironmentFocuses on system modeling, simulation, and design using specialized toolsInvolves system integration, testing, and requirements management
Industry UsageCommon in aerospace, defense, automotive, and complex systems industriesWidely used across IT, manufacturing, and engineering sectors

While both roles require strong engineering backgrounds, Model Based System Engineers specialize in creating and analyzing system models to optimize design, whereas Systems Engineers focus on integrating and managing entire systems throughout their lifecycle.

Job description

Job Title: Model Based Systems Engineer

Job Description

The Model Based Systems Engineer develops and maintains model-based representations of complex aerospace and communication systems using leading MBSE tools. This role defines concepts of operations, use cases, and architectures, and implements them within modeling environments to support requirements traceability, system integration, and verification and validation activities across the full systems lifecycle.

Responsibilities

  • Model system requirements using MBSE tools such as CAMEO or Rhapsody to create clear, consistent, and maintainable system representations.
  • Define concepts of operations (CONOPS), use cases, and system architectures and accurately link these elements within the MBSE tool environment.
  • Utilize Jira and Jama to maintain robust requirements traceability from initial definition through design, integration, and verification and validation.
  • Develop and refine architecture definitions and product breakdown structures that support complex aerospace and communication systems.
  • Implement system architectures into MBSE models, ensuring alignment between the architecture, requirements, and system behavior.
  • Drive requirements development for verification and validation (V&V) and ensure appropriate integration of V&V activities into the system models.
  • Support systems engineering activities across the full lifecycle, including concepts, requirements, design support, integration, and V&V.
  • Contribute MBSE expertise to human spaceflight and space project initiatives, ensuring models reflect mission needs and safety considerations.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams to communicate system behavior, interfaces, and requirements through model-based artifacts.
  • Help build and shape an emerging MBSE capability by establishing best practices, standards, and workflows within the organization.

Essential Skills

  • 3+ years of hands-on MBSE architecture experience using software tools such as Rhapsody, Cameo, or similar modeling environments.
  • Strong experience in systems engineering, particularly within aerospace or communication systems domains.
  • Demonstrated experience working on space projects, with an understanding of space system constraints and mission requirements.
  • Experience across the full systems lifecycle, including concepts, requirements, design support, integration, and verification and validation (V&V).
  • Human spaceflight engineering experience, with familiarity in modeling requirements and architectures for crewed missions.
  • Proficiency with MBSE methodologies and Model Based Systems Engineering practices.
  • Practical experience using CAMEO and Rhapsody for system modeling and architecture development.
  • Ability to use Jira and Jama to manage and trace requirements throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Capability to define and document CONOPS, use cases, and architecture elements in a clear and structured manner.
  • Strong communication skills to convey complex system concepts to diverse engineering stakeholders.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience working with human spaceflight programs and related engineering disciplines.
  • Familiarity with tools and processes used in large aerospace or space station-related programs.
  • Ability to establish and refine MBSE standards, templates, and guidelines within a growing team.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail in system modeling and requirements management.
  • Collaborative mindset and willingness to support multiple programs and projects simultaneously.
  • Interest in contributing to the development of an MBSE-focused team and capability within the organization.
