Job Description

The Medical Assistant, Primary Care will provide direct and indirect patient care in a primary care pediatric office under the supervision and delegation of a pediatrician and/or nurse practitioner. The Medical Assistant, Primary Care proactively supports efforts that result in delivery of safe patient care and services and promote a friendly and safe environment at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.

Experience

  • One year of medical assistant experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in pediatrics, including obtaining vitals, assisting clinical staff with patient care, phlebotomy, and specimen collection procedures

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant program

Certification Summary

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) through American Heart Association (AHA) within 30 days of employment
  • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) from American Association of Medical Assistants, Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) from American Medical Technologists, Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) from National Health Career Association, National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA) from National Center for Competency Testing, Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) from American Allied Health, Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) from American Registry of Medical Assistants or Certified Clinical and Administrative Assistant from MedCA within six (6) months of employment

Job Responsibilities

Clinical Duties

  • Maintain high quality patient experience - welcome patients, ensure a safe patient environment, ensure office and exam room cleanliness, and ensure appropriate supplies and equipment for patient care in adherence to infection control policy and procedures.
  • Perform and record patient's vitals to include but not limited to height, weight, temperature, blood pressure, pulse, pulse ox, and respiration rate.
  • Ensure all age-appropriate intake questionaries are completed for well visits before the patient is roomed. Assist patient as needed. Obtain history per protocol and accurately document and update the electronic record for all visits.
  • Prepare exam rooms and patient for clinician examination, ensure clinician orders are performed and accurately documented. Perform or assist clinician with necessary age-appropriate vision, hearing screenings, suture removal, ear lavage, urine cauterization, ear-piercing, wound care, CLIA waived laboratory tests, nebulizer treatments, specialty procedures and emergency response with proper clinician supervision.
  • Perform and document vaccine and medication reconciliation with patient and state registry; provide vaccine information statements, education of patients/parents prior to vaccine and medication administration.
  • Ensure and adhere to vaccine cold chain management with proper handling, storage, preparation and administration to include reporting vaccine excursion.
  • Perform proper patient identifiers and perform proper vaccine and medication administration to include intramuscular, intradermal, subcutaneous injections with post observation as directed by provider.
  • Collect and process lab specimens.
  • Maintain cleanliness and sterilization of medical instruments and exam areas.
  • Follow all HIPAA, infection prevention and OSHA office policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrate competencies that incorporate age-specific guidelines, including N = Neonate (less than 30 days),I = Infant (30 days to 1 year),EC = Early Childhood (1-5 years),LC = Late Childhood (5-13 years), A = Adolescent (13-17 years), AD = Adult, and ALL = all ages.

Administrative Duties

  • Complete patient follow up and tasks assigned to include but not limited to answering phones, handling correspondence, prescription refill requests, obtaining medication pre-authorization, assisting with patient referrals, patient form completion to include DME, therapy, school clearance, sports and medication forms, arrange home, hospital care, procedures and follow-up appointments, etc.
  • Assist in managing patient flow to ensure efficient care delivery.
  • Medical assistants are essential members of patient-centered medical home team and will perform and meet best practice standards, quality and key performance indicators set forth by the organization.Other various duties as assigned.
