What is a mobile operator?

Mobile operators, also known as mobile network operators (MNOs), are companies that provide wireless communication services to customers. They own or control the infrastructure and network required to offer voice calls, text messaging, and mobile internet access. Popular examples include Verizon, AT&T, Vodafone, and T-Mobile. Mobile operators often offer various plans and services, as well as customer support and device sales. They play a key role in enabling connectivity and communication through mobile devices.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mobile operator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mobile Operator, you need a strong understanding of telecommunications systems, attention to detail, and a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with mobile network management tools, basic electronics, and sometimes certifications like CompTIA Network+ are commonly required. Strong communication skills, problem-solving abilities, and teamwork help operators respond quickly to network issues and collaborate with technical teams. These skills ensure reliable service delivery, quick resolution of technical problems, and smooth operation within a fast-paced telecom environment.

What are some typical challenges faced by mobile operators, and how can they effectively address them?

Mobile Operators often encounter challenges such as managing high call volumes, troubleshooting technical issues with mobile devices or networks, and ensuring consistent customer satisfaction. Staying updated with frequent technology changes and new service offerings is also a key aspect of the role. To address these challenges, successful operators focus on ongoing training, clear communication, and leveraging support from technical teams or supervisors when complex problems arise. Building strong problem-solving skills and remaining patient under pressure are essential for thriving in this fast-paced environment.

Job description

We're looking for a Product Owner to lead the evolution of TEGNA's Mobile Newsroom Platform on iOS and Android. More than just a mobile app, this platform is becoming the mobile operating system for our newsrooms, connecting journalists, producers, editors, photographers, and newsroom leaders to the people, stories, content, and AI-powered tools they need to do their best work from anywhere.

You'll own the roadmap for the mobile newsroom experience, helping transform how stories are planned, assigned, created, collaborated on, and published across TEGNA's nationwide newsroom network. Working at the intersection of Product, Engineering, Design, AI, and Editorial, you'll build products that make journalism faster, smarter, and more connected.

Who You Are

You are passionate about building products that empower people to do meaningful work. You have a strong product mindset, balancing customer needs, business priorities, and technical realities to deliver intuitive, high-impact solutions. You enjoy spending time with users, understanding their workflows, and translating complex newsroom operations into simple, elegant mobile experiences. You're equally comfortable discussing strategy with editorial leadership, refining user stories with Engineering, reviewing prototypes with Design, and validating ideas with customers. You don't simply deliver features. You solve problems, measure outcomes, and continuously improve the product. You're organized, pragmatic, and outcome-oriented, with a strong sense of ownership and a passion for building products that customers love. Moreover, you are motivated and inspired by TEGNA's mission to connect and serve local communities everywhere.

Scope of Responsibility

Lead a high-performing cross-functional product team (Product, Design, Engineering, and QA) responsible for TEGNA's Mobile Newsroom Platform across iOS and Android.

Own the product vision, roadmap, and backlog for the platform, partnering across Product, Engineering, AI, UX Research, and Editorial to continuously evolve it into the primary mobile workspace for journalists. Deliver capabilities that help users plan coverage, manage assignments, collaborate on stories, create mobile-first content, search and access media, leverage AI, and stay connected throughout the news gathering process.

Lead agile planning, backlog refinement, sprint execution, release planning, and stakeholder communication while continuously measuring product success through customer feedback, adoption metrics, and operational improvements.

Top Key Activities

  • Product Vision & Platform Evolution: Define and execute the long-term vision for the Mobile Newsroom Platform, continuously identifying opportunities to simplify newsroom workflows and expand the platform into the primary mobile operating system for TEGNA's journalists.
  • Backlog Ownership: Own and prioritize the product backlog, balancing customer needs, strategic initiatives, technical investments, and engineering capacity to ensure the team is always working on the highest-value opportunities.
  • Customer Discovery: Spend regular time with journalists, producers, assignment editors, photographers, and newsroom leaders observing workflows, validating problems, and ensuring product investments solve meaningful newsroom challenges.
  • Requirements & Backlog Refinement: Translate newsroom workflows and customer feedback into clear epics, user stories, acceptance criteria, and product requirements. Maintain a healthy, prioritized backlog that supports predictable delivery.
  • Sprint Planning & Delivery: Partner closely with Design, Engineering, and QA throughout sprint cycles to ensure high-quality execution, rapid decision making, and successful delivery of capabilities across iOS and Android.
  • Editorial Partnership: Build trusted relationships with editorial leadership and newsroom stakeholders across the company, serving as the primary product partner for mobile newsroom workflows and ensuring product priorities align with business and customer needs.
  • AI Workflow Integration: Identify opportunities to incorporate AI into newsroom workflows through capabilities such as metadata generation, workflow automation, and other productivity-enhancing experiences.
  • Strategy & Roadmap Definition: Contribute to product strategy and roadmap development in partnership with Product Leadership, ensuring the Mobile Newsroom Platform aligns with TEGNA's broader vision for content creation and newsroom transformation.
  • User Research & Analytics: Partner with UX Research to validate opportunities, test solutions, and analyze customer behavior. Use qualitative research and product analytics to measure success and prioritize future investments.
  • Continuous Improvement: Monitor adoption, engagement, customer satisfaction, and operational efficiency metrics to identify opportunities for continuous improvement and measurable customer impact.
  • Communications: Lead stakeholder communications covering roadmap priorities, release plans, delivery progress, launch readiness, dependencies, tradeoffs, risks, and post-launch performance.

Domain Acumen

  • Experience building or supporting mobile-first products on iOS and Android with a strong understanding of native mobile user experience principles.
  • Experience owning workflow-oriented products where speed, usability, reliability, and customer productivity are primary success measures.
  • Strong understanding of agile product development practices including backlog management, sprint planning, user story development, and iterative delivery.
  • Ability to translate complex operational workflows into intuitive product experiences that reduce friction and improve efficiency.
  • Experience working with analytics platforms (e.g., Amplitude or similar) to measure product adoption, engagement, and feature success.
  • Experience partnering with UX researchers and designers to identify customer problems, validate solutions, and continuously improve the user experience.
  • Understanding of AI-powered product capabilities and how emerging technologies can improve customer workflows and productivity.
  • Experience working with content management systems, collaboration platforms, media asset management systems (MAM), digital publishing platforms, or creator tools is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of newsroom operations, editorial workflows, journalism, or media technology is a plus.

Key Professional Traits and Requirements

  • Experience delivering mobile applications across iOS and Android
  • Passion for building products that improve customer workflows and productivity
