What is mobile applications development?

Mobile applications development is the process of creating software applications that run on mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets. These apps are typically designed for operating systems like Android or iOS. The development process includes designing the user interface, writing code, testing, and deploying the app to app stores. Developers often use programming languages like Java, Kotlin, Swift, or frameworks such as React Native to build these applications.

What is the difference between Mobile Applications Development vs Web Development?

Mobile Applications Development focuses on creating apps for smartphones and tablets, requiring knowledge of mobile-specific languages and SDKs. Web Development involves building websites and web applications accessible via browsers, using different programming languages and frameworks. While both fields require coding skills, their tools, environments, and deployment methods differ significantly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Mobile Applications Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mobile Applications Developer, you need strong programming skills in languages such as Java, Kotlin, Swift, or Dart, along with a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with development frameworks (like Android Studio or Xcode), version control systems (such as Git), and mobile UI/UX guidelines is crucial. Creativity, problem-solving, and effective communication help developers collaborate and adapt to rapidly changing requirements. These skills ensure the delivery of high-quality, user-friendly apps that meet business and customer needs in a competitive market.

What are some common challenges faced by mobile applications developers when working on cross-platform projects?

Mobile applications developers working on cross-platform projects often encounter challenges such as maintaining consistent user experiences across different devices and operating systems. Ensuring compatibility and optimal performance can be difficult due to variations in hardware, screen sizes, and OS-specific features. Additionally, integrating native device functionalities and keeping up with frequent updates to platforms like iOS and Android require continuous learning and adaptation. Collaboration with designers, QA testers, and backend teams is essential to address these complexities effectively.

About the Organization
Now is a great time to join Redhorse Corporation. We are a solution-driven company delivering data insights and technology solutions to customers with missions critical to U.S. national interests. We’re looking for thoughtful, skilled professionals who thrive as trusted partners building technology-agnostic solutions and want to apply their talents supporting customers with difficult and important mission sets.

About the Role
Redhorse transforms the way government uses data and technology. To support this mission, we are seeking a Senior Mobile Applications Developer & Systems Engineer to support a critical Intelligence Community (IC) Sponsor. This isn't just a coding role; you will be the technical linchpin for a program manager, translating complex operational needs into deployable technical solutions. Your work will directly impact how geospatial mission data is utilized in the field, ensuring that widely-used technical strategies are executed with precision. If you are a polished developer who thrives in a fast-paced environment and can deliver high-impact results with minimal ramp-up time, we want you on our team.
Key Responsibilities
  • Directly assist the Sponsor program manager with operational and database support, ensuring the reliability of complex technical solutions.
  • Collaborate across multiple operational teams to develop and execute strategies for technical systems used enterprise-wide.
  • Serve as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in geospatial technology and mobile ecosystems.
  • Translate high-level operational needs into detailed technical requirements through direct customer engagement.
  • Track and manage program progress, identifying risks, issues, and dependencies to ensure mission success.
  • Provide technical advice and direction based on practical knowledge of mobile hardware, operating systems (Android/iOS), and security mechanisms.
  • Lead technical meetings with vendors to communicate mission requirements and evaluate software (Commercial, FOSS, and GOTS).
  • Integrate geospatial mission data within common enterprise web applications.
  • Perform system and database administration, including file and access management within Amazon EC2, S3, and related AWS services.
Required Experience/Clearance
  • Active TS/SCI clearance with Polygraph.
  • 8+ years of experience in applications development or systems engineering.
  • Expert-level proficiency in Android mobile application development (Must-have).
  • Proven experience in iOS application development.
  • Demonstrated experience translating operational mission needs into technical requirements.
  • Technical proficiency with Amazon Web Services (AWS), specifically EC2 and S3.
  • Experience in system and database administration within a cloud environment.
Desired Experience
  • Background in Geospatial technology or GIS-related applications.
  • Knowledge of mobile security mechanisms and encryption protocols.
  • Experience briefing high-level customers and stakeholders on technical strategy.
  • Familiarity with Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) and Government Off-the-Shelf (GOTS) integration.
  • Experience managing fast-paced workloads with minimal supervision.
