Job description

Position Summary


Teal Drones is looking for a hands-on Android Engineer with strong C++ experience to help develop and maintain mobile applications for our drone platforms. This role focuses on building reliable, high-performance Android applications that support real-time telemetry, mission planning, video streaming, and vehicle control.

You will work across Android, C++, networking, and real-time communication systems to create software used in field-deployed drone operations. The ideal candidate is comfortable debugging complex technical issues, optimizing performance on Android devices, and collaborating with embedded and flight software teams.

This role is a great fit for someone who enjoys solving low-level technical problems and building applications that interact closely with hardware, networking, and real-time systems


Essential Duties and Responsibilities


Android & Application Development

  • Develop and maintain Android applications for drone operations and mission management.
  • Build features using C++, Qt, and/or native Android technologies.
  • Create and improve real-time interfaces for telemetry, mapping, and vehicle control.
  • Debug and resolve issues involving performance, threading, and application stability.
  • Support Android deployment workflows including APK generation and testing.

Communication & Networking

  • Work with communication systems between Android devices and drones.
  • Support networking protocols including UDP, TCP, USB, and serial communication.
  • Troubleshoot telemetry, connectivity, and latency issues.
  • Collaborate with embedded and firmware teams to improve reliability and performance.

Performance & Reliability

  • Optimize CPU, memory, and battery usage on Android devices.
  • Troubleshoot crashes, ANRs, and application performance issues.
  • Support logging, diagnostics, and field debugging workflows.
  • Help improve application stability for real-world operational environments.

Build Systems & Tooling

  • Maintain Android and C++ build environments and toolchains.
  • Work with Android SDK/NDK and cross-compilation workflows.
  • Support CI/CD pipelines and automated builds/testing.
  • Debug build and deployment issues across Android and native layers.

Collaboration & Field Support

  • Work closely with software, embedded, and flight-test teams.
  • Support field testing and troubleshooting activities.
  • Participate in technical discussions, code reviews, and feature planning.
  • Contribute to development best practices and documentation.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 2+ years of software engineering experience with Android and/or C++ development.
  • Strong programming skills in C++.
  • Experience building or debugging Android applications.
  • Familiarity with networking, multithreading, or real-time systems.
  • Strong problem-solving and debugging skills.
  • Comfortable working in Linux-based development environments.

Additional Desired Qualifications


  • Experience with Qt/QML or cross-platform application development.
  • Familiarity with robotics, drones, or embedded systems.
  • Experience with MAVLink, PX4, ArduPilot, or similar systems.
  • Experience with Android SDK/NDK development.
  • Familiarity with video streaming technologies such as GStreamer or WebRTC.
  • Experience with CI/CD tools such as Jenkins or GitLab CI.
  • Knowledge of Python for scripting or automation.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions


  • Must be able to walk, stand, and navigate large indoor and outdoor facilities for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and move materials and equipment weighing up to 25 lbs on a regular basis.
  • Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) may be required in designated areas or when performing specific tasks, in accordance with safety protocols and company policy.
  • May be required to climb ladders, stoop, kneel, or crouch during inspections, maintenance walk-throughs, or emergency response situations.
  • Regular exposure to facility operations including noise, dust, temperature fluctuations, and industrial equipment.
  • Occasional off-hours or weekend work required for emergency facility responses or projects as needed
  • Requires frequent use of a computer and other standard office equipment for documentation, communication, and coordination tasks.
