Software Engineer - Mobile

Job description

Position Summary

The Software Engineer - Mobile owns the design, development, and testing of Lightspeed's Android and iOS applications, partnering closely with business analysts, other engineers, and project managers to translate dealer needs into functioning mobile features. This role works across the full mobile stack - React Native, JavaScript, iOS SDK, and Android SDK - and helps drive the mobile team's transition to Agile ways of working.

Beyond feature delivery, this engineer takes ownership of the applications dealers rely on daily: triaging and fixing bugs, shipping upgrades, and ensuring mobile experiences stay reliable and well-tested as they connect back into Lightspeed's core DMS data - inventory, service, parts, and CRM records - for thousands of dealers.

What You'll Do

Mobile Application Development

  • Plan, design, develop, and test applications for Android and iOS mobile platforms using React Native, JavaScript, iOS SDK, and Android SDK.
  • Design and code custom components and app features, iterating through modifications until the application functions as planned.
  • Build mobile features that integrate with Lightspeed's core DMS platform, keeping dealer-facing data - inventory, service, parts, and CRM - accurate and in sync in real time.
  • Write and maintain automated tests to keep functionality covered as features are added or changed.

Requirements & Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Collaborate with analysts, other developers, and project managers to determine requirements for custom mobile applications, including appearance, functionality, and integration needs.
  • Participate in code reviews and provide constructive, collaborative feedback to peers.
  • Support the mobile team's transition to Agile methodologies, participating fully in sprint planning, standups, and retros.
  • Communicate clearly and proactively across engineering, product, and support teams.

Release Support & Quality

  • Provide ongoing support for released applications, including diagnosing and fixing bugs and shipping upgraded versions to the App Store and Google Play.
  • Identify and troubleshoot issues proactively, taking initiative to resolve them before they impact dealers.
  • Apply strong testing discipline - unit, integration, and API-level tests - to keep code coverage high.

Technical Craft & Growth

  • Apply computer science fundamentals - data structures, algorithm analysis, number systems, and the product development cycle - to build maintainable, scalable mobile code.
  • Stay current on mobile platform capabilities, development tools, and network communication technologies.
  • Take ownership of projects, driving them from requirements through release.
What You Should Have

Required Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience with React Native or JavaScript, including creating custom components for production mobile applications.
  • Solid understanding of software design, development, and testing concepts, including Data Structures, Methods, Number Systems, Algorithm Analysis, and Product Development Cycles.
  • Experience identifying and troubleshooting bugs, with a strong testing mindset - unit, integration, and experience working with APIs.
  • Experience working in Agile methodologies, including sprint ceremonies and iterative delivery.
  • Good working knowledge of network communications, preferably OSI model technologies.
  • Ability to learn new programming languages and adapt quickly to new tools.
  • Exposure to dealer, franchise, or vertical SaaS business models is a plus, given Lightspeed's focus on Dealer Management SaaS.
  • Strong communication and collaborative skills, with excellent organizational ability.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience building and deploying production applications for both Android and iOS.
  • Experience using Jest for testing.
  • Experience with AWS architectures.
  • Working knowledge of SQL, including complex joins.
  • Experience with Enterprise Architectures and Service-Oriented or Microservice Architecture.
  • Kotlin and/or Java language skills.
  • Experience working in Android Studio and Xcode.
  • Experience creating and consuming RESTful web services.
  • Docker and container orchestration experience; Kubernetes a plus.
  • BS in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent experience.
