Mobile App Engineer information

What are some common challenges faced by mobile app engineers when working on cross-functional teams?

Mobile App Engineers often collaborate with designers, backend developers, product managers, and QA specialists to deliver seamless app experiences. A common challenge is ensuring clear communication across disciplines, especially when translating design concepts into functional mobile features or syncing backend APIs with app requirements. Navigating differing priorities and timelines between teams can also require effective negotiation and adaptability. Building strong relationships and proactively addressing misunderstandings are key to overcoming these challenges and delivering high-quality apps.

What is the difference between Mobile App Engineer vs Mobile Developer?

AspectMobile App EngineerMobile Developer
CredentialsBachelor's in CS or related field, certifications like Android or iOS developmentSimilar credentials, often with certifications in specific platforms
Work EnvironmentCollaborates with cross-functional teams, involved in app architecture and testingFocuses on coding, UI design, and app implementation
Industry UsageUsed across tech companies, startups, and enterprises for app developmentCommonly used interchangeably with Mobile App Engineer in job listings

While both roles require similar skills and credentials, a Mobile App Engineer typically involves a broader scope, including architecture and testing, whereas a Mobile Developer mainly focuses on coding and UI design. The terms are often used interchangeably in the industry, but the Engineer role may encompass more strategic responsibilities.

What does a mobile app engineer do?

A Mobile App Engineer designs, develops, tests, and maintains applications for mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. They typically work with programming languages like Swift for iOS, Kotlin or Java for Android, and sometimes cross-platform tools like Flutter or React Native. Their responsibilities include ensuring app functionality, optimizing performance, fixing bugs, and updating apps to support new devices or operating system versions. Mobile App Engineers also collaborate with designers, product managers, and other developers to create user-friendly and secure mobile applications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mobile app engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mobile App Engineer, you need strong programming skills in languages such as Swift, Kotlin, or Java, along with a solid understanding of mobile UI/UX principles and a relevant degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with development frameworks (like React Native or Flutter), version control systems (such as Git), and experience with app store deployment are typically required. Problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication are vital soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure high-quality, user-friendly applications and efficient collaboration with cross-functional teams in a rapidly evolving tech environment.

Job description

What you'll do:

We're looking for a Senior Software Engineer who specializes in React Native to help us build the core betting experience, from the moment a customer builds a slip through submission, confirmation, and settlement. Our work spans full stack in Ruby, iOS, Android, and Web products, and you'll bring deep React Native expertise to that mix, to make sure the experience holds up to a high bar for speed and reliability at scale.

This means owning cross-cutting problems that touch multiple platforms, driving design decisions that hold up under real production traffic, and closing the gap between how a feature is supposed to work and how it actually behaves once it ships. You'll dig into the trickiest bugs and edge cases in the betting experience, help raise the bar for what "done" looks like across the client, and coach other engineers along the way so the patterns you introduce actually stick.

  • Build and scale core parts of the mobile and web apps in React Native; entry building, review, placement, and tracking. The whole lifecycle.
  • Investigate and resolve critical issues in the React Native client, and put guardrails in place so they don't recur.
  • Lead design reviews for initiatives that cut across iOS, Android React Native clients, calling out trade-offs, risks, and failure modes before they become incidents.
  • Partner with backend, product, and design on entry placement, entry confirmation, slip changes and errors, and bet history to keep the experience fast and consistent
  • Turn ambiguous, cross-team goals into concrete plans with milestones and clear owners
  • Use data like product analytics, error dashboards, and session data to validate that fixes actually land and to catch regressions early
  • Coach other engineers on design reasoning and ownership, and create reusable patterns that other teams adopt
  • Anticipate and mitigate risks in shared systems before they impact other teams or customers
Who you are:
  • 7+ years of professional software engineering experience, with meaningful time spent in React Native and a solid grasp of the native iOS/Android layers underneath it
  • A track record of solving cross-cutting or ambiguous problems that span multiple services, teams, or platforms; not just staying in your lane
  • Experience leading technical initiatives (performance work, reliability improvements, developer velocity) with measurable before/after impact
  • Comfort turning unclear, high-level goals into an executable plan with milestones and owners that other teams actually align on
  • A collaborative, coaching mindset; you make other engineers better through review and design discussion, not just your own output
  • Strong written and verbal communication; you can make a technical trade-off legible to product, design, and other engineering teams
  • Experience with mobile app performance, testability, and shipping reliable features at scale
Bonus points if you have:
  • Background in sports, fantasy, or gaming
  • Experience working on wagering, betting, or other high-stakes transactional flows
  • Familiarity with Amplitude, Datadog, or similar tools for instrumenting and monitoring client-side behavior

Our target starting base salary range for this position is between $150,000 and $220,000, plus target equity. Final compensation will be determined based on a variety of factors including relevant experience, skills and expertise, interview performance, and other market considerations.

What we can offer you:
  • Unlimited PTO for full-time employees (we're extremely flexible with the exception of the first few weeks before and into the NFL season)
  • 16 weeks of fully paid parental leave
  • Home office stipend
  • A virtual-first culture, but we come together a few times per year in person for offsites, trainings, hackathons, and more
  • Slack reactions for every occasion
  • 401k with up to 5% employer match
  • Company paid health, dental, vision plan options for employees and dependents, FSA, and more
  • Opportunity to celebrate your favorite sports teams through local meetups and company-sponsored events
  • Claude and ChatGPT enterprise accounts
