Frontline workers increasingly rely on intelligent, speech-enabled applications to access information, complete tasks, and interact with industrial systems. Cerence is bringing Voice AI and Embedded AI to tablets, industrial devices, HMIs, and operator interfaces across manufacturing environments.

Role Overview

The Senior Application Developer will build intelligent applications used directly by frontline workers and manufacturing operators. You will integrate Cerence SDK technologies, embedded Small Language Models (SLMs), speech interfaces, and enterprise workflows into tablets, rugged mobile devices, industrial HMIs, control panels, and other connected devices used across factory environments.

Your Impact

  • Build applications used directly on factory floors and industrial environments.
  • Integrate Cerence SDK and speech technologies into edge devices and operator workflows.
  • Enable voice-driven maintenance, troubleshooting, quality, safety, and productivity use cases.
  • Deliver embedded AI experiences using on-device SLMs and Edge AI technologies.
  • Create intuitive user experiences that improve frontline worker efficiency and operational visibility.

Key Responsibilities

  • Cross-Device Application Development: Build and maintain applications running on Android tablets, iOS devices, rugged handhelds, industrial HMIs, operator terminals, and other edge devices.
  • SDK & Middleware Integration: Integrate Cerence SDK technologies and develop middleware enabling STT, TTS, NLU, and voice-driven workflows.
  • Frontline Worker Applications: Build applications supporting maintenance, inspection reporting, troubleshooting, safety, quality, warehousing, and field service activities.
  • Frontline Process Applications: Develop interfaces for operator assistance, machine interactions, digital work instructions, and process monitoring.
  • Embedded AI & SLM Integration: Deploy and optimize embedded SLMs and AI capabilities for low-latency, offline-capable experiences.
  • Enterprise Connectivity: Connect applications with MES, ERP, PLM, Digital Twins, and industrial data services.

What You Bring

Mandatory (Must Have)

  • 5+ years of experience building production-grade embedded or edge applications for Android, iOS, tablets, ruggedized devices, industrial HMIs, or other connected devices used in operational environments.
  • Experience developing and deploying applications on Android, iOS, or equivalent embedded device platforms.
  • Experience integrating SDKs, middleware, APIs, and device-level capabilities.
  • Hands-on experience with Speech-to-Text, Text-to-Speech, Voice Assistants, or Conversational AI applications.
  • Experience deploying embedded AI, Small Language Models (SLMs), and on-device inference.
  • Strong proficiency in Kotlin, Java, C++, Swift, or similar technologies.
  • Experience building connected and offline-capable applications.

  • Deep Android platform expertise including hardware integration, background services, device management, and performance optimization.

Education & Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Embedded Systems, Electronics Engineering, Industrial Automation, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Equivalent practical experience developing edge and embedded applications will also be considered.

  • Salary range$107,000.00 USD - $172,600.00 USD It is not typical for offers to be made at or near the top of the range. The actual salary will be determined based on experience and other job-related factors.
