Job description

The purpose of the MLS, Technical Coordinator position is to organize and assure efficient function and operation of the microbiology laboratory section, with versatility to perform procedures in all sections of the laboratory when working weekends, alone or as workload requirements demand. May be assigned special duties in addition to Technical Coordinator duties and assume responsibility of a section or entire laboratory when the director or manager is absent.
This position requires a highly trained, specialized individual who has the ability to work under stress in a variety of situations. The MLS, Technical Coordinator works closely with patients, the Pathologist, office staff, physicians, nursing service, and other LRH personnel. Effective interpersonal and communication skills are essential. The incumbent has access to sensitive, confidential information and must be able to maintain those confidences. The incumbent establishes the work procedures and priorities within imposed deadlines.
Duties include and are not limited to:
  • Monitors test results within the established statistical limits of the quality control program.
  • Documents deviation from the expected, showing the reason and steps taken to solve the problem.
  • Cooperates in the laboratory Quality Improvement program through collecting data, reviewing results, and cooperating with corrective recommendations.
  • Demonstrates working knowledge of CAP and CLIA '88 regulations.
  • Acts as a resource for problem solving, corrective action, and troubleshooting for laboratory procedures and unexpected events in laboratory operation.
  • Researches and develops new lab procedures/instrumentation in consultation with Pathologist.
  • Maintains a updated and appropriate policy and procedure, quality control program, and acceptable proficiency survey results.
  • Obtains specimens from patients of all ages with care and concern for patient's welfare and safety; instructs patients regarding procedures to be performed with care and understanding for the person's physical or emotional needs.
  • Orients and provides training to new employees and students.

Hours/Shifts
80 hours biweekly, shifts from 6am-2:30pm Monday to Friday and every third weekend.
Compensation
Hourly Wage Range: $32.57-$43.13. Please note that final compensation will be determined based on experience, qualifications and internal equity considerations.

  1. Education/Special Skills: A Bachelor of Science degree from an approved school including an internship under the direction of a Pathologist in an approved laboratory. Must possess an appropriate HHS approved laboratory certification (ASCP, NCA, or AMT). Must maintain approved certification status. Certification renewal must be verified as active 2 months from valid through date. Must have experience as staff medical technologist. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Computer knowledge required. Ability to follow detailed blood collection and lab procedures and develop new procedures as needed by the Pathologist.
  2. 3-5 years of experience in microbiology.
  3. Successful completion of the pre-employment health screening process required.
  4. Mental Demands: Requires ability to perform at an independent level with minimal direction; exercise good judgement and initiative; problem solve; make decisions in a variety of situations; and resolve minor conflicts.
  5. Must be able to attend work site per schedule. Duties may require limited amount of non-scheduled overtime hours as work load requires. Duties may require change of shift to accommodate workload and/or labor supply shortage.
