Scope of Work: GIS Internship

1. Objective & Position Summary

The County Management Information Systems (MIS) Department is seeking a GIS Intern to support the modernization of spatial data, as well as web and mobile mapping applications for both public and internal use. This position provides hands-on experience applying advanced geospatial technologies to local government workflows and includes opportunities for regional and state collaboration.

The intern will work directly under the guidance of the County GIS Analyst within the MIS Department to build internal and public-facing solutions using the Esri ecosystem.

2. Position Logistics

  • Compensation: $25.00 - $30.00 per hour (dependent on qualifications).
  • Duration: 13 weeks.
  • Timeline: October 1st, 2026, through December 31st, 2026.
  • Weekly Schedule: 25 hours per week across 3 to 5 days.
  • Total Hours: 325 total hours.
  • Work Location: Hybrid structure. Primary work occurs in person at the Cook County Courthouse or designated County facilities, with opportunities for scheduled remote work.
  • Application Deadline: August 30th

3.Candidate Qualifications

  • Education:
    • Current college student enrolled in a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) program or a related field.
    • OR a recent graduate with a degree in Geospatial Sciences, GIS, Geography, or a similar discipline.
    • Technical Skills: Foundational knowledge of ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, and standard spatial data management principles.
  • Professionalism: Strong communication skills for working in a professional department environment and representing the County at regional meetings.

4. Scope of Duties & Core Deliverables

The intern will execute a variety of GIS tasks using ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online (AGOL). Specific project focus areas include:

Public Safety Data Development

  • County-Wide AED Inventory: Coordinate, capture, and map Automated External Defibrillator locations across the county to support emergency response systems.

Environmental & Land Management Applications

  • Permit Mapping Solution: Perform data requirements gathering and prototype application development for a streamlined spatial workflow for Septic and Land Use Permit management.
  • Site Plan & As-Built Mapping Solution: Perform data requirements gathering and prototype application development for Site Plan and As-Built Mapping tools for use by permit applicants.

Advanced Remote Sensing & Automation

  • GeoAI Utilization: Implement deep learning tools within ArcGIS Pro to automate feature extraction from high resolution aerial imagery to capture new geospatial data and improve the accuracy of existing data.

Other Duties as Assigned

  • Additional application development, spatial analysis, and map design as time permits.

Professional Development

  • Regional Collaboration: Attend and participate in regional GIS user group meetings to network and align with regional geospatial standards.
