What are Minka?

Minka are traditional Japanese rural houses that were historically inhabited by farmers, artisans, and merchants. These homes are characterized by their wooden framework, thatched or tiled roofs, and flexible, open interior spaces. Minka structures were designed to harmonize with their natural surroundings and often feature sliding doors, tatami mat floors, and an irori (sunken hearth) for heating and cooking. Today, many minka are preserved as cultural heritage sites, showcasing the unique craftsmanship and architectural techniques of Japan's past.
