SummaryEvery position within the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston contributes to extending the ministry of the Archbishop. The person serving as Auditor/Assessor participates directly in the canonical and pastoral mission of the Church through service to the Metropolitan Tribunal and those who seek its assistance. This role serves an important ecclesial and judicial function within the Metropolitan Tribunal, balancing pastoral sensitivity with rigorous canonical analysis.The Auditor/Assessor assists the judges of the Metropolitan Tribunal in the administration of ecclesiastical justice according to the norms of canon law.As Auditor, the position is responsible for collecting and evaluating evidence in canonical trials, particularly through conducting witness interviews and canonical depositions.As Assessor, the position assists judges in the review and analysis of cases, participates in judicial deliberations as requested, and contributes to the drafting of judicial sentences and other canonical documents.The Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston is committed to fostering a workplace that reflects the dignity of every human person and supports the mission of Jesus Christ and His Church. This position reports to the Director of the Tribunal and requires the use of sound judgment, discretion, confidentiality, analytical reasoning, and pastoral sensitivity.

  • Support the mission, teachings, and values of the Catholic Church and the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston through professional and personal conduct.
  • Perform Auditor/Assessor duties in accordance with canon law.
  • Assist Tribunal judges by gathering, reviewing, organizing, and analyzing case materials, testimony, and documentation.
  • Prepare judicial sentences, decrees, and other canonical documents.
  • Collaborate with Tribunal staff to ensure timely and compliant case processing.
  • Support the Judicial Vicar and Tribunal Director with special projects and additional responsibilities as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of Catholic Church teachings, structure, and mission, with understanding of canon law, particularly matrimonial and procedural law, or the ability to acquire such knowledge.
  • Strong analytical, critical-thinking, organizational, and time-management skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with clergy, religious, and laity.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, exercise discretion, manage multiple priorities, and
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and related business applications.
  • Skilled in conducting interviews, gathering testimony, preparing professional reports, and

presenting information clearly.

  • Fluent in English (reading, writing, speaking, and comprehension); additional language

skills are a plus.

  • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends as needed.
Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a degree in theology, philosophy, canon law, religious studies, law, or a related field. At least 5 years’ experience in Church ministry, ecclesiastical administration, canon law, legal work, or a related field required, and a familiarity with canonical processes and marriage jurisprudence is strongly preferred. Candidates must have a valid Texas Driver’s License and reliable transportation. Authorization to work in the United States is required.

Physical Requirements

The employee must regularly be able to communicate effectively through speaking and listening;read, comprehend, and prepare written materials; use computers, telephones, and standard office equipment; sit, stand, walk, bend, and carry materials as needed. Work is performed in a professional office environment. The position requires strict confidentiality due to the sensitive nature of Tribunal proceedings.
