Job Duties
This wage/part-time position, under the supervision of the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) and guidance of the Infection Control Committee:
Is responsible for the coordination and implementation of the hospital-wide infection surveillance, prevention, and control program according to The Joint Commission (TJC) standards, CDC guidelines, CMS requirements, Virginia Health Department requirements, and relevant OSHA standards.
Serves as a consultant on infection control issues.
Provides patient and staff education in matters of infection control practice and procedures.
Implements and coordinates the Employee Health Program.
Assists with New Employee Orientation (NEO) and Annual Mandated Training (AMT) in coordination with the Staff Development Coordinator and the Nursing Educator.
The Infection Control Program's purpose is to identify and reduce risks of endemic and epidemic infections in patients and staff.
Minimum Qualifications
Must have considerable clinical experience in a hospital setting or disease surveillance experience in a public health setting.
Must have a current and in good standing Registered Nurse license to practice in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Completion of Association for Practitioners in Infection Control (APIC) training course or equivalent experience.
Must receive Certification in Infection Control (CIC) within three (3) years of hire.
Valid driver's license is required and must remain valid and in good standing throughout employment.
This position also requires:
Knowledge of infection control standards as promulgated by the Virginia Department of Health, CDC, CMS, OSHA, and The Joint Commission.
Knowledge of established nursing principles and practices relative to infection control and employee health.
Ability to monitor infectious diseases and analyze relevant information.
Ability to educate and train employees on infection control procedures.
Ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally with all staff levels.
Ability to assist with coordination of a hospital-wide Infection Prevention and Control program. This includes policy and procedure development, staff and client education, surveillance and monitoring, data entry and analysis with graphic displays to show trends, reporting, and making recommendations, implementing plans of action, and evaluating results.
Principles, practices, and standards of nursing to provide care appropriate to adult and geriatric client populations with mental health and physical illnesses.
Must have demonstrated ability to:
Make difficult decisions with authority and ownership and through appropriate consultation.
Resolve complex problems using data, obtaining input from others, and evaluating results.
Effectively use interpersonal skills to communicate, listen, resolve conflict, and motivate others.
Collaborate with medical staff, administrative staff, and others to ensure high standards are met, and to actively participate in committee meetings.
Handle multiple priorities through time management, organizational skills, and delegation.
Establish an infection prevention and control assessment and improvement plan.
Additional Considerations
Considerable experience in upper level management of inpatient infection prevention and control.
Advanced computer skills and demonstrated experience with Quality Management and Improvement.
Experience working in an inpatient setting related to mental illness or geriatric treatment.
