How much do mine welder jobs pay per hour?

As of Jul 16, 2026, the average hourly pay for mine welder in the United States is $22.26, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $18.75 and $24.76 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Mine Welder, and why are they important?

To excel as a Mine Welder, you need expertise in welding techniques, blueprint reading, and safety regulations, usually supported by a welding certification or vocational training. Familiarity with arc welding equipment, cutting torches, and specialized mining machinery is often required. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and teamwork are crucial soft skills for this role. These skills help ensure safe, high-quality welds in challenging mining environments, minimizing hazards and maintaining operational efficiency.

What are mine welders?

Mine welders are skilled tradespeople who specialize in welding tasks within mining operations. They repair, fabricate, and maintain mining equipment such as drills, loaders, conveyors, and structural components to ensure that machinery operates safely and efficiently. Working in challenging environments, mine welders must follow strict safety protocols and often work underground or in remote locations. Their expertise is crucial for minimizing equipment downtime and supporting the overall productivity of mining sites.

What are some common challenges faced by mine welders, and how can they be addressed?

Mine welders often work in confined spaces and harsh environments, which can make welding tasks physically demanding and require strict adherence to safety protocols. Challenges include exposure to dust, variable temperatures, and the need to weld on irregular or hard-to-reach surfaces. Addressing these challenges involves using proper personal protective equipment (PPE), staying updated on safety training, and collaborating closely with other maintenance and engineering staff to ensure repairs are carried out efficiently and safely. Regular communication with the team and maintaining equipment in good condition also help mitigate risks.

What is the difference between Mine Welder vs Construction Welder?

AspectMine WelderConstruction Welder
CertificationsWelding certifications, possibly including specialized certifications for underground or heavy-duty weldingStandard welding certifications, such as AWS certifications, often for structural or architectural welding
Work EnvironmentUnderground mines, open-pit mines, or industrial mining sitesConstruction sites, buildings, bridges, and infrastructure projects
Industry UsageMining industry, heavy industry, resource extractionConstruction industry, infrastructure development, commercial and residential projects

Mine Welders specialize in welding within mining environments, often working underground or in heavy-duty conditions, requiring specific certifications. Construction Welders focus on building structures and infrastructure on construction sites, with certifications suited for structural welding. Both roles demand strong welding skills but differ mainly in work environment and industry applications.

Can you make $300,000 as a welder?

Mine welders can potentially earn $300,000 annually, especially those working in high-paying industries like oil and gas or in remote locations with overtime and hazard pay. Achieving this level typically requires extensive experience, specialized skills, certifications, and working in demanding environments. Most welders' salaries are lower, but top earners in specialized fields can reach or exceed this amount.

Can you make $100,000 as a welder?

Mine welders can potentially earn $100,000 or more annually, especially with experience, specialized skills, certifications, and working in high-demand or remote locations. However, such salaries are typically achieved through overtime, union wages, or working in hazardous environments, and are not standard for all welding positions.

What do welders do in the mines?

Mine welders perform welding and repair work on mining equipment, structures, and pipelines in underground or surface mining environments. They use specialized tools and techniques to ensure equipment safety and operational efficiency, often working with heavy machinery and requiring safety certifications. Their work helps maintain the integrity of mining infrastructure and prevent equipment failures.

What welding jobs pay $50 an hour?

Mine welders and industrial welders with specialized skills and certifications can earn around $50 an hour or more, especially in high-demand environments such as construction, manufacturing, or oil and gas industries. Experience, certifications like AWS or ASME, and working in remote or hazardous conditions often contribute to higher pay rates.
