How much do mine geology jobs pay per year?

As of Jul 3, 2026, the average yearly pay for mine geology in the United States is $77,030.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $56,000.00 and $93,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

How does a Mine Geologist typically collaborate with mining engineers and other site professionals during a project?

Mine Geologists work closely with mining engineers, surveyors, and other site professionals to ensure that geological information is integrated into mine planning and operations. They provide critical data on ore body characteristics, support grade control, and help optimize extraction processes. Regular communication and joint site inspections are common, allowing for real-time adjustments to mining plans based on geological findings. This collaborative approach helps maximize resource recovery while maintaining safety and operational efficiency.

How much money does a mining geologist make?

A mining geologist's salary typically ranges from $60,000 to $100,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and the size of the mining operation. Entry-level positions may start lower, while experienced professionals with specialized skills or certifications can earn higher wages.

What do geologists do in mining?

In mining, geologists study rock formations, mineral deposits, and geological data to identify and evaluate potential mining sites. They conduct fieldwork, analyze samples, and create geological maps to guide extraction operations and ensure safe, efficient resource development.

What is the difference between Mine Geology vs Mine Engineering?

AspectMine GeologyMine Engineering
Primary FocusStudying mineral deposits, mapping, and resource estimationDesigning, planning, and managing mining operations
Required CredentialsGeology degree, often with certifications in mineral explorationMining engineering degree, with professional engineering licenses
Work EnvironmentFieldwork, exploration sites, laboratoriesMine sites, planning offices, project management
Industry UsageExploration companies, resource estimation firmsMining companies, operations management

While Mine Geology focuses on identifying and evaluating mineral deposits through fieldwork and analysis, Mine Engineering involves designing and overseeing the extraction process. Both roles are essential in the mining industry but serve different stages of the mining lifecycle.

What is the highest paying geology job?

In geology, roles such as petroleum geologists and exploration managers tend to have the highest salaries, often exceeding $100,000 annually, especially with experience and advanced certifications. Senior positions in the oil and gas industry or consulting firms typically offer the highest compensation for geology professionals.

What is mine geology?

Mine geology is the study and application of geological science in mining operations. Mine geologists are responsible for mapping, sampling, and analyzing geological formations to determine the location, quality, and quantity of ore and minerals. They work closely with mining engineers to optimize resource extraction while ensuring safety and environmental compliance. Their work helps maximize the value of a mine and minimize costs and risks associated with extraction.

What is the highest paid job in the mines?

In mine geology and related mining roles, senior positions such as mine managers, chief geologists, and exploration managers tend to have the highest salaries, often exceeding six figures annually. These roles require extensive experience, advanced technical skills, and often involve overseeing large operations or strategic planning.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Mine Geologist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mine Geologist, you need a solid background in geology, mineralogy, and resource estimation, typically supported by a relevant degree in geology or earth sciences. Familiarity with geological modeling software, GIS systems, and sampling techniques is commonly required, along with certifications such as a Professional Geologist (PG) license in some regions. Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are vital soft skills for collaborating with mining teams and conveying complex geological data. These skills ensure accurate resource evaluation, safe extraction processes, and optimized mine operations.

Job description

Position Description:

Would you like to have a career with a collaborative, diverse, and dynamic mining company? We have an exciting opportunity for you!

Our people division is growing, and we are looking for a Principal Mine Geology to join our team.  The successful candidate will provide enterprise expertise in mine geology to improve understanding of orebody exposure, structural controls, and grade variability, strengthening reconciliation between geological models and mining performance.

At Barrick, our vision is to be the world's most valued gold mining business by finding, developing, and operating the best assets with the best people. We are committed to a safe work environment sending every person home safe and healthy every day and leaving a sustainable legacy on our host communities.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical leadership in mine geology practices across underground and open pit operations, establishing and maintaining best-practice standards, promoting consistency across assets, and actively participating in independent peer reviews.

  • Lead and mentor Mine Geology leadership and SMEs, fostering collaboration across site geology teams and supporting knowledge sharing, coaching, and the transfer of key operational learnings related to orebody behavior, structural complexity, and grade variability.

  • Own and continuously improve Model to Mine to Mill reconciliation systems, standards, and data tracking, ensuring accurate data flow from mine to mill, evaluating reconciliation between models and production, and driving a strong feedback loop to improve performance across the mining geology value chain.

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with mining engineers, metallurgists, and other stakeholders to ensure integration across geology, metallurgy, mine planning, and exploration, optimizing resource extraction strategies and supporting aligned decision-making.

  • Analyze geological observations from mining to refine orebody interpretation, improve understanding of orebody geometry, structural controls, and mineralization continuity, and support operations in interpreting variability observed during production.

  • Identify and provide expertise on geological factors impacting mining performance, including grade variability, dilution, ore loss, and structural features (faults, folds, breccias), ensuring these insights are incorporated into geological models and mine planning.

  • Support and enhance grade control strategies, including evaluation of drilling approaches, interpretation workflows, and guidance to improve mining selectivity and ore/waste discrimination.

  • Partner with geological modeling specialists to ensure models reflect mining observations, improving domaining, structural interpretation, and continuity assumptions, and ensuring insights inform resource models and future drilling strategies.

  • Support continuous improvement of mine geology workflows, data collection practices, and technical approaches, while providing expert guidance on complex geological challenges and participating in technical reviews where geology impacts resource confidence or mine planning.

  • Escalate material geological matters to the Director, Geology, as appropriate.

  • Preform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in Geology, Geological Engineering, or a related field; or Bachelor of Science degree with equivalent experience required
