What is the difference between Internship Stratigraphy vs Geology Intern?
| Aspect | Internship Stratigraphy | Geology Intern |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | Basic geology coursework, some field experience | Similar, often includes geology or earth science classes |
| Work Environment | Field sites, labs, office | Fieldwork, labs, office |
| Employer & Industry Usage | Mining, oil & gas, environmental firms | Mining, environmental, consulting firms |
| Comparison Search Intent | Understanding specialized stratigraphy tasks | Broader geology internship roles |
Internship Stratigraphy focuses specifically on sedimentary layers and stratigraphic analysis, often requiring knowledge of stratigraphic principles. Geology Internships cover a broader range of earth science topics, including mineralogy, petrology, and general geology. Both roles are valuable entry points in the geology industry, but Internship Stratigraphy offers specialized experience in stratigraphic methods and sediment analysis.

At WSP, we are driven by curiosity, powered by collaboration, and committed to delivering impactful environmental solutions. Our Site Investigation & Remediation (SIR) team supports public and private sector clients by evaluating and managing environmental risk through site investigations, data analysis, and remediation support across Texas and beyond.

- Detailed soil and lithologic logging
- Maintain accurate and defensible field documentation, including logs, chain-of-custody forms, and photo records.
Employ contemporary analytical techniques to examine both organic and inorganic compounds, determining their constituent components.
- Coordinate with subcontractors (drillers, surveyors, laboratories) and adhere to site-specific Health & Safety Plans (HASP).
- Participate in regular field assignments, requiring travel and work outdoors in variable Texas conditions.
- Data Management & Reporting
- Compile and manage field and laboratory data in accordance with WSP standards.
- Support preparation of technical deliverables, including:
- Site investigation reports
- Figures, tables, and maps
- Boring logs and monitoring well construction documentation
- Assist in data interpretation under direction of senior staff.
- Team & Project Support
- Collaborate with geologists, engineers, and project managers to meet project quality and schedule objectives.
- Assist with field preparation activities including equipment setup, calibration, and logistics planning.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Geology or a closely related field.
- Excellent research skills with an analytical mindset.
- Strong interest in field-based environmental consulting work.
- Ability and willingness to perform physically demanding field tasks (lifting equipment, extended walking/standing, outdoor work).
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficient self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
- Ability to work independently under general supervision, as well as part of a team to meet business objectives.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook).
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel to project sites.

- Field camp completion or equivalent hands-on field training (strongly preferred)
- Internship or prior experience in:
- Environmental consulting
- Drilling oversight and soil/rock logging
- Remediation system monitoring and sampling
- Familiarity with regulatory frameworks (e.g., TCEQ, EPA) is a plus.
- Basic experience with GIS or data visualization tools is a plus.
