How much do mine design jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 26, 2026, the average yearly pay for mine design in the United States is $89,183.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $66,500.00 and $109,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is the difference between Mine Design vs Mine Planning?

AspectMine DesignMine Planning
Primary FocusCreating detailed layouts and engineering plans for mine developmentScheduling and optimizing extraction processes and resource utilization
Required SkillsGeotechnical knowledge, CAD skills, engineering principlesProject management, data analysis, scheduling software
Work EnvironmentField visits, design offices, collaboration with geologists and engineersOffice-based, project timelines, coordination with operations

Mine Design involves developing detailed plans for mine layout and engineering, focusing on safety and feasibility. Mine Planning concentrates on scheduling and optimizing extraction activities to maximize efficiency and profitability. Both roles are essential in the mining industry and often work closely together to ensure successful mine operations.

What jobs will boom in 2026?

In 2026, demand is expected to increase for roles in renewable energy, data analysis, and technology development, including positions like renewable energy engineers, data scientists, and software developers. Skills in digital tools, programming, and environmental sustainability will be highly valued in these growing fields.

What do FIFO engineers make?

FIFO (Fly-In Fly-Out) engineers in mine design typically earn between $80,000 and $150,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and company. They often work on rotational schedules, requiring strong technical skills and safety knowledge in remote mining environments.

What is the highest paying job in the mines?

In mine design, senior roles such as Mine Managers or Chief Engineers tend to be the highest paid, often earning six-figure salaries due to their experience, leadership responsibilities, and technical expertise. Specialized positions like Mining Engineers with advanced skills in geotechnical or ventilation design can also command high salaries, especially with certifications and extensive experience.

Can AI replace mining engineers?

Mining engineers plan and oversee the extraction of minerals and resources, relying on technical knowledge, site assessments, and safety considerations. While AI can assist with data analysis, modeling, and automation of certain tasks, it cannot fully replace the expertise, decision-making, and problem-solving skills of mining engineers in complex and dynamic environments.

The Archimedes Open Pit was mined by multiple operators from 1997 through 2021 with heap leach recovery continuing today. Archimedes Underground will access over one million ounces of gold resource via portals in the Archimedes pit. Mine development was initiated in September 2025 with first ore expected in min-2026. Production will ramp up through the remainder of 2026 and 2027 to approximately 1800 ore tons per day by the end of 2027. The Mineral Point Open Pit is host to over 5 million ounces of estimated gold resources presently identified and will ultimately become i-80's flagship operation.
