Make a meaningful difference in your community as a Literacy Coordinator with the Library! This rewarding position supports adult literacy programs by connecting students and tutors, coordinating community outreach and special events, promoting programs through social media and creative communications, and providing essential administrative support. We’re looking for a detail-oriented, organized, and compassionate professional with strong written and verbal communication skills who is comfortable using Microsoft Office and Canva and understands the importance of confidentiality. If you enjoy working with people, creating engaging outreach materials, supporting community programs, and helping others achieve their literacy goals, this is an opportunity to put your talents to work for a great cause. Knowledge of a foreign language is preferred.


This position is based out of the Rustburg Library. It is normally 16 hours per week, and the general weekly schedule is flexible. Some evenings and weekends required for meetings and outreach events.


Performs with excellence, the following tasks, including but not limited to:

  • Manage literacy database LACES Entries for program - new students/tutors/hours 
  • Maintain student and tutor files
  • Responsible for bi-weekly social media posts
  • Responsible for submitting promotional advertising for Event Guide, Eblast, and all in-house ads
  • Send email reminders/texts to tutors for monthly hour reports
  • Process incoming checks as needed
  • Plan (with Program Manager) and participate in community outreach events
  • Participate in ongoing continuing education opportunities regarding best practices for adult literacy programs through webinars, conferences, etc.
  • Schedule, attend, participate, send out reminders and any changes for the 2nd Thursday/Bi-monthly Literacy Advisory Board Meetings. Take minutes and distribute to Literacy Advisory Board members
  • Plan, coordinate, and promote special events with Program Manager (annual tutor appreciation, holiday brunch, etc.)
  • Perform various administrative duties assigned: files correspondence, compiles reports, updates databases, mailing & maintaining mailing lists, contact lists, maintains cumulative records of donations, maintains files, composes correspondence, etc.
  • Assist and participate in all fundraising & promotional events and help develop ideas
  • Assist with recruitment through events and creating publications
  • Address, stuff envelopes, and mail out donation ask letters. Send thank you letters/certificates to donors. Submit donations for deposit and maintain donation log 
  • Write, produce, and distribute biannual literacy newsletter
  • Perform other duties as assigned or requiredother duties as assigned or required.
