A millwright designs, builds, installs, repairs, and maintains mills and similar machinery for a variety of industries, such as automotive, food processing, or nuclear. As a millwright apprentice, you learn this trade from a journeyman millwright or private company and work with systems like conveyors, compressors, and processing equipment. You typically help with a range of daily duties, including dismantling machines, constructing foundations, and installing components.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a millwright apprentice, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Millwright Apprentice, you need a solid understanding of mechanical systems, basic math skills, and a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with hand and power tools, blueprint reading, and, in some regions, enrollment in a recognized apprenticeship program are typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively make you stand out in this role. These skills ensure safe, efficient installation, maintenance, and repair of industrial machinery in demanding work environments.

What are some common challenges millwright apprentices face during their training, and how can they overcome them?

Job description

Apprentice Precision Millwright Mechanic A day in the life at WK Industrial Services Corp.

Your day starts with a toolbox talk and a safety check. You gear up, review drawings with a senior millwright, and set up precision tools. Before lunch, you’re assisting with the alignment of a gearbox on a production line. In the afternoon, you help rig and place a pump, verify dimensions against the layout, and document your work. By day’s end, tools are cleaned, materials are staged for tomorrow, and your hours are recorded.

About us

WK Industrial Services Corp. delivers nationwide industrial construction and millwright solutions—from equipment installation and rigging to maintenance and full turnkey projects—for manufacturing and heavy‑industrial customers. Safety, quality, and developing the next generation of skilled trades talent drive everything we do.

The role

This entry-track role supports experienced millwrights with the installation, assembly, troubleshooting, and upkeep of industrial machinery and mechanical systems. It’s built for mechanically inclined, safety‑minded individuals who want to grow into a fully trained millwright through hands‑on work, mentorship, and on‑the‑job learning.

  • Fabricate & Prep: Measure, cut, drill, and prepare components as directed; route and install shafts, bearings, belts, and chains.
  • Maintain & Repair: Support preventive maintenance (lubrication, cleaning, basic part changes), and assist with tear‑downs, rebuilds, and repairs under guidance.
  • Rig & Move: Learn safe rigging, hoisting, and equipment movement using cranes, forklifts, hoists, and rigging gear.
  • Read the Prints: Help interpret mechanical drawings/blueprints and verify measurements for accurate installation.
  • Safety First: Follow OSHA, company, and customer safety rules; use proper PPE; participate in safety meetings and LOTO procedures; keep the work area clean and organized.
  • Tools & Docs: Use and care for hand/power tools and precision instruments (calipers, micrometers, dial indicators); record daily hours and tasks; assist with cleanup and material staging.
What you bring Required
  • Mechanical aptitude and a strong desire to learn the millwright trade
  • 3 years of experience in mechanical, construction, industrial, or related work
  • Competence with basic hand and power tools
  • Ability to travel to job sites and work overtime/weekends as needed
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
Preferred
  • Enrollment in or completion of a millwright, industrial maintenance, or mechanical trade program
  • Foundational understanding of industrial equipment, hydraulics, or mechanical systems
  • OSHA 10 certification
  • Experience in manufacturing or industrial construction settings
Core competencies
  • Dependable work ethic and a safety‑first mindset
  • Clear communication and strong teamwork
  • Ability to follow instructions, ask clarifying questions, and solve problems
  • Motivation to advance within the skilled trades
Physical demands
  • Lift 50–75 lbs regularly
  • Stand, climb, kneel, bend; work in confined spaces or at heights
  • Comfort operating in noisy, dusty, hot industrial environments around moving machinery
  • Work in varied weather and jobsite conditions
