What are millwork companies?

Millwork companies are businesses that specialize in the manufacture, fabrication, and installation of custom wood products for building interiors and exteriors. These products can include doors, window casings, moldings, trim, cabinetry, and architectural woodwork. Millwork companies work with architects, builders, and homeowners to create both standard and custom designs, often adding decorative and functional value to residential or commercial spaces. Their expertise in woodworking and finishing techniques ensures high-quality, durable, and aesthetically pleasing results.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive at a millwork company?

To succeed at a millwork company, you need expertise in woodworking, blueprint reading, and custom fabrication, often supported by vocational training or an apprenticeship. Familiarity with CNC machinery, AutoCAD, and woodworking tools is typically required, along with certifications such as OSHA safety training. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and teamwork are vital soft skills in this field. These competencies ensure precise, high-quality custom products and safe, efficient operations in a demanding manufacturing environment.

What are some common challenges faced when working for a millwork company and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in millwork companies often encounter challenges such as tight project deadlines, precise custom specifications, and coordinating with multiple contractors or designers. Addressing these challenges requires strong attention to detail, effective time management, and clear communication skills. Being proactive in clarifying project requirements with clients and collaborating closely with team members can help ensure smooth workflows. Continuous learning about new materials, tools, and fabrication techniques can also enhance your adaptability and success in this dynamic environment.

Job description

Millwork Project Manager

Location: Redwood City, CA
About Johnston Millwork
Johnston Millwork is a premium custom millwork company specializing in custom cabinetry, architectural millwork, doors, moldings, windows, and installation throughout the Bay Area. We're known for exceptional craftsmanship, outstanding customer service, and delivering projects the right way. As we continue to grow, we're looking for people who take ownership, solve problems, and care deeply about quality.
Position Summary

The Millwork Project Manager owns each project from the moment the contract is signed through final completion.
This is not an administrative role, and it is not a sales position. This is an ownership role responsible for planning, procurement, budgeting, scheduling, production coordination, installation coordination, and customer communication.
Your mission is simple:
Deliver every project on time, within budget, and with an exceptional customer experience.

Responsibilities

  • Manage projects from contract through final completion.
  • Purchase materials and coordinate vendor deliveries.
  • Manage project budgets and protect profitability.
  • Coordinate with production to keep projects on schedule.
  • Schedule and oversee installations.
  • Review drawings and project specifications for accuracy.
  • Manage RFIs, submittals, and change orders.
  • Visit jobsites to verify conditions and resolve issues.
  • Communicate proactively with customers, vendors, and internal teams.
  • Ensure every project is completed to Johnston Millwork's quality standards.
Qualifications

  • 3+ years of project management experience in millwork, cabinetry, finish carpentry, remodeling, or construction.
  • Ability to read architectural and shop drawings.
  • Strong organizational, budgeting, and communication skills.
  • Experience coordinating vendors, production, and field installation.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Valid driver's license and willingness to travel to Bay Area jobsites.
Who We're Looking For

We're looking for someone who takes ownership.
You don't wait for problems—you anticipate them.
You don't point fingers—you solve problems.
You communicate clearly, follow through on commitments, and take pride in delivering exceptional work.
If you're looking for a job where you can make a real impact and help build one of the Bay Area's premier custom millwork companies, we'd love to meet you.
