Production Support Engineer - Linux / Middleware
Location: Richmond, Virginia (Onsite)
Role Overview
We are seeking a Production Support Engineer for an operational and engineering support role focused on messaging middleware. This position serves as a key liaison between production and development teams. The ideal candidate will be adept at diagnosing issues in large, multi-datacenter application environments and will contribute to the design of resilient messaging architectures.
Key Responsibilities
  • Provide NonStop Technical Support including OS, Coldloads, Safeguard, TAL, FUP, PUP, SCF, Backups, Expand, and Xypro utilities.
  • Define, automate, and maintain support processes for data validation, entitlements integration, and upgrades.
  • Optimize existing solutions and contribute to the design of resilient, low-latency/high-throughput messaging architectures.
  • Develop software solutions to address manual work or inefficient processes using languages like Perl, Python, Bash, or C derivatives.
  • Diagnose and resolve issues in large, multi-tiered application environments.
  • Coordinate with application and infrastructure teams during releases and manage vendor support tickets.
  • Participate in on-call support for the production environment and assist with troubleshooting production applications.
  • Follow reference models and blueprints to ensure design compliance and assist in translating business requirements into technical definitions.
Required Qualifications
Education: A computer science degree or an equivalent qualification is required.
Experience:
  • 2-4 years of experience working in a UNIX/Linux production environment with hundreds of hosts.
  • Minimum of 4 years of programming experience in Perl, Python, Bash, or a C derivative (e.g., C++, Java).
  • 2-4 years of experience with data structures and databases (SQL, NoSQL).
  • Experience with on-call support and troubleshooting for production applications.

Technical Skills:
  • Strong knowledge of protocols such as TCP/IP, SSL/TLS, SSH, and SFTP.
  • Proficiency in Linux, Java, and Python.
  • Familiarity with version control and project tracking tools like Git, Bitbucket, and Jira.
  • Basic knowledge of Middleware (AMPS, MQ, Kafka) and Platform OS (Windows, Unix).

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with HSM support, specifically Utimaco and Futurex.
  • Automation skills with Ansible.
  • Experience supporting multiple authentication methods like Kerberos or SiteMinder.
  • Excellent documentation skills using MS Office, MS Visio, and MS Project.
