Search/Comparison IntentYesCommonly compared with Mid Level Structural Engineer

The Mid Level Structural Engineer typically holds a PE license, performs structural analysis, and manages projects, whereas a Structural Designer focuses on creating detailed drawings and plans. Both roles are essential in the structural engineering industry, but the engineer has broader responsibilities including analysis and project oversight.

What are some typical challenges a Mid Level Structural Engineer faces when transitioning from junior roles, and how can they successfully navigate them?

As a Mid Level Structural Engineer, you may encounter challenges such as handling increased project responsibility, managing junior team members, and coordinating with multiple disciplines (like architects, contractors, and MEP engineers). You'll also be expected to make more independent decisions and ensure your designs comply with complex codes and standards. To navigate these challenges, focus on honing your project management skills, actively seek feedback from senior engineers, and maintain clear communication with your team and stakeholders. Embracing continuous learning and proactive problem-solving will help you grow and succeed in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Mid Level Structural Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mid Level Structural Engineer, you need a solid foundation in structural analysis, design principles, and a bachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering, often with professional EIT or PE certification. Proficiency with industry-standard software such as AutoCAD, Revit, SAP2000, or ETABS is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial for collaborating with project teams and conveying technical information. These skills ensure safe, efficient, and innovative structural solutions that meet project requirements and regulatory standards.

What does a Mid Level Structural Engineer do?

A Mid Level Structural Engineer designs, analyzes, and oversees the construction of buildings, bridges, and other structures to ensure they are safe and durable. They typically work as part of a team, using engineering principles and software tools to create structural plans, review blueprints, and solve complex design challenges. In addition to technical tasks, they often coordinate with architects, contractors, and other engineers, and may mentor junior staff. Their responsibilities often include site visits, preparing reports, and ensuring projects comply with codes and regulations.

Job description

Job Title: Structural Engineer (Industrial & Advanced Facilities)
Role Overview
We are seeking a mid-level Structural Engineering Professional to join our high-tech industrial design team. In this role, you will be a vital contributor to the analysis and design of complex structures for advanced manufacturing and general industrial environments. You will work closely with a multidisciplinary team to develop design concepts, perform rigorous structural calculations, and translate requirements into precise 3D models and construction documents. This position offers a high degree of autonomy and significant opportunities for career growth for a motivated engineer with a strong foundation in structural fundamentals and seismic design.
Key Responsibilities
Structural Analysis & Design
โ€ข Engineering Execution: Perform all conventional aspects of structural analysis and design under general supervision, applying engineering techniques for traditional steel and concrete structures.
โ€ข Code Compliance: Apply expert knowledge of US building codes-including IBC, ASCE 7, ACI, and AISC-with a specific focus on lateral analysis (wind and seismic provisions).
โ€ข Software Integration: Utilize structural analysis software, Navisworks, and Bluebeam to validate designs and coordinate with 3D modeling teams.
Project Ownership & Coordination
โ€ข Scope Management: Take full ownership of assigned work scopes, ensuring all deliverables meet schedule, budget, and quality requirements.
โ€ข Technical Initiative: Actively determine requirements for projects with complex or evolving conditions, taking the initiative to forecast effort and identify scope changes early.
โ€ข Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Coordinate structural requirements with other engineering disciplines to ensure seamless integration within a complex facility environment.
Quality & Mentorship
โ€ข Rigorous QA/QC: Exhibit a high level of attention to detail by self-checking work and performing peer calculation reviews for other engineers.
โ€ข Professional Growth: Provide technical guidance and mentorship to designers and junior engineers, while proactively advancing workflows and embracing emerging BIM technologies.
Qualifications & Requirements
โ€ข Education: Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (emphasis in Structural Engineering). A Master's degree (MS) in Structural Engineering is preferred.
โ€ข Licensure: Professional Engineer (PE/PEng) license is required.
โ€ข Experience: * Minimum of 4 years in structural engineering.
oProven experience with US building codes and seismic design.
oHands-on experience with industrial facility design is a significant plus.
โ€ข Technical Skills: Proficiency in structural analysis software and BIM coordination tools (Navisworks).
โ€ข Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a strong ability to build interpersonal relationships within a matrixed team.
โ€ข Logistics: Ability to provide reliable internet service to meet remote project performance requirements.
