Job description

The Software Developer Intern role is a developmental position designed to provide practical, hands-on experience in software development, application support, database technologies, and related information technology functions. Working under the guidance and supervision of experienced software development personnel, the intern will assist with the development, testing, documentation, maintenance, and support of internally developed applications and business systems. This position provides an opportunity to develop the technical skills and experience necessary for potential progression into a Software Developer I position. The Software Developer Intern performs assigned work under the supervision or guidance of experienced technical personnel. The intern is not expected to independently design or administer business-critical systems, manage production databases, plan production software releases, or independently resolve complex application issues. As knowledge and proficiency increase, the intern may be assigned progressively more complex development and support activities with appropriate oversight.

Successful completion of the internship does not guarantee promotion or continued employment. However, demonstrated technical proficiency, successful completion of assigned work, and the ability to perform increasingly complex tasks with reduced supervision may qualify the employee for consideration for a Software Developer I position.

A sample of the duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist software development personnel with analyzing software functionality, application performance, and hardware/software interfaces.
  • Learn and apply established programming standards, coding practices, and software development techniques.
  • Assist with coding, testing, debugging, configuring, publishing, migrating, and documenting software applications under the direction of experienced development personnel.
  • Develop familiarity and practical experience with C#, MVC, Web Forms, and other technologies used to support internally developed applications.
  • Assist with basic database queries, testing, data validation, and application-related database activities using SQL Server Management Studio and Oracle SQL Developer.
  • Assist with routine maintenance and support of internally developed web applications and Quantum ERP contracts.
  • Provide basic application support to users under the guidance of experienced development personnel and escalate issues when appropriate.
  • Assist with troubleshooting routine web application, file formatting, file conversion, and file transfer issues.
  • Participate in application testing, including documenting test results, identifying potential defects, and verifying software changes.
  • Assist development personnel with software deployments, application updates, version upgrades, and related testing activities.
  • Assist with the installation, configuration, and testing of workstations and supporting hardware, software, and networking components when needed.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation related to assigned applications, processes, software changes, testing activities, and troubleshooting procedures.

Education

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited college or university pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, Computer Information Systems, or a closely related field.
  • Junior or senior academic standing is preferred.
  • Coursework or demonstrated academic experience in programming, software development, database concepts, or related computer science disciplines is preferred.
  • Equivalent combinations of relevant education, technical training, projects, or practical experience may be considered.

Experience

  • Coursework, academic projects, personal projects, internships, or other practical exposure to web-based application development is preferred. Familiarity with one or more .NET technologies and programming languages or frameworks such as C#, ASP.NET, ASP.NET Core, LINQ, Entity Framework, Web Forms, MVC, T-SQL, SQL, XML, HTML, Syncfusion, JavaScript and JavaScript libraries, and CSS is desirable. Exposure to mobile application development, database-driven applications, or reporting and data visualization tools such as Crystal Reports, Power BI, or similar reporting libraries is a plus but not required.
  • Preferred Experience in: Microsoft Visual Studio, Microsoft Office Suite, and Microsoft SQL Server. MVC is a plus, but not required.

Security

  • Ability to obtain and retain a valid security clearance enabling access to various Government facilities.
