Mid Level Remote Software Developer information

What is a mid level remote software developer?

A Mid Level Remote Software Developer is a software engineer with several years of experience (typically 2-5 years) who works from a location outside of a traditional office environment, often from home. They are responsible for designing, coding, testing, and maintaining software applications, collaborating with team members through digital communication tools. Mid level developers are expected to work independently on moderately complex tasks, contribute to code reviews, and assist junior developers. Remote roles require strong time management and communication skills to ensure productivity and effective teamwork.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mid level remote software developer?

To thrive as a Mid Level Remote Software Developer, you need proficiency in programming languages (such as JavaScript, Python, or Java), experience with software development methodologies, and a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, cloud platforms (e.g., AWS or Azure), and collaborative tools such as Jira or Slack is typically expected. Strong problem-solving abilities, self-motivation, and effective written communication help you excel, especially in a remote environment. These skills and qualities are essential for delivering high-quality software, collaborating efficiently with distributed teams, and adapting to evolving project requirements.

What are some common challenges faced by mid level remote software developers, and how can they be addressed?

Mid-level remote software developers often encounter challenges such as maintaining effective communication with distributed teams, managing their time independently, and staying aligned with project goals without in-person supervision. To address these, it's important to proactively participate in virtual meetings, use collaboration tools like Slack or Jira, and set clear daily or weekly work objectives. Regular check-ins with team members and seeking feedback can also help ensure that you remain connected and productive, fostering both personal growth and project success.

What is the difference between Mid Level Remote Software Developer vs Junior Remote Software Developer?

About the role

We're looking for an Intermediate Software Developer, Full Stack (Python/React) to join our growing AI Engineering team and help build reliable, production-grade AI and data products for one of Canada's largest P&C insurers. You'll contribute across the full technology stack-from information extraction and LLM-powered features to distributed systems, frontend platforms, cloud infrastructure, and delivery automation

What you'll do here:

  • Work within a multidisciplinary environment that brings together data science, software engineering, actuarial science, business, and design.
  • Design, build, test, deploy, and operate reliable services and data pipelines in production.
  • Develop end-to-end information extraction solutions, including classification, OCR and document-layout processing, model-based extraction, downstream refinement, and validation.
  • Take LLM- and machine-learning-backed features from prototype to production by integrating cloud model providers and balancing quality, latency, reliability, and cost.
  • Design and own distributed system components, including queue-based pipelines, fan-out and fan-in workflows, backpressure, idempotency, failure handling, retry semantics, and safeguards against data loss or duplication.
  • Diagnose and resolve issues across distributed pipelines using structured logs, custom metrics, and traceable queries that follow a failed request through the system.
  • Influence the AI roadmap of the biggest P&C insurer in Canada.
  • Build and maintain frontend applications and shared React component libraries in a monorepo, with a focus on TypeScript design, build performance, bundling, and production delivery.
  • Develop and maintain infrastructure as code using Terraform, including reusable modules, remote state, provider version pinning, and multi-environment configurations.
  • Design and operate AWS solutions beyond application services, including networking, load balancing, API gateways, encryption and key management, IAM, and log and metric delivery pipelines.
  • Design CI/CD workflows, including reusable pipelines, environment matrices, and production approval gates.
  • Keep pace with new technologies and apply them thoughtfully to improve your solutions.
  • Tune containerized services for performance and cost by evaluating resource sizing, concurrency limits, and actual bottlenecks under load.
  • Share knowledge with interns, data scientists, and software developers to help the team grow.

What you bring to the table:

  • A bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering or any combination of equivalent education and experience.
  • Proficiency in Python, REST/ GraphQL APIs, AWS (S3, Lambda, Sagemaker or similar services).
  • Experience with machine learning and scientific computing libraries such as scikit-learn, NumPy, SciPy, Tensorflow, etc.
  • Experience with pipelines, Ingestions/automations.
  • Good knowledge of software engineering practices such as design patterns, knowledge of the development cycle and other tools such as Git, Jira, Confluence.
  • The commitment to be a great, collaborative teammate.
  • Unlimited curiosity and a passion to challenge the status quo.
  • Ability to focus on vaguely defined issues requiring the application of a creative approach.
  • Strong communication, time management and work organization skills.
  • If you don't have experience in the AI field, a strong motivation to learn this new and exciting field.
  • No Canadian work experience required however must be eligible to work in Canada.
  • For candidates located in Quebec, bilingualism is required considering the necessity to interact on a regular basis with English-speaking colleagues across the country

Nice-to-have:

  • Experience migrating a dependency manager, CI platform, or infrastructure layout in a live codebase.
  • Experience building local development and integration-test harnesses using emulated cloud services.
  • Experience tuning containerized services for resource utilization, concurrency, latency, throughput, and cost.
  • Knowledge of DevOps tools such as Kubernetes and ELK.
