Job Title: Chief Medical Officer
Location: Haxtun, Colorado
Department: Medical Staff โ€“ Primary Care Clinic, ER, and Hospital
Reports To: Chief Executive Officer
Position Summary:
Haxtun Health is seeking an experienced and dynamic Chief Medical Officer to lead our medical team, ensuring high-quality patient care, operational efficiency, and alignment with the organizationโ€™s strategic goals. This role is pivotal in overseeing all clinic physicians and mid-level providers, as well as hospitalists and mid-level providers in the ER and inpatient departments. The COS will work closely with executive leadership to drive patient outcomes while maintaining financial stewardship and fostering a collaborative, team-based culture.
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership & Strategic Oversight
  • Provide leadership and direction for all physicians and mid-level providers in the clinic, ER, and inpatient hospital settings.
  • Actively participate in strategic decision-making, ensuring patient outcomes and financial sustainability align with Haxtun Healthโ€™s mission.
  • Develop and implement clinical policies and best practices to optimize patient care and workflow efficiency. Serve as the primary liaison between medical staff and executive leadership, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement across all medical departments.

Clinical Oversight & Provider Management
  • Provide mentorship as needed to clinic, ER, and hospital-based providers, including physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants.
  • Provide encouragement to medical team to directly admit patients from the clinic to the hospital or ER when appropriate, supporting seamless and local continuity of care.
  • Establish standardized clinical guidelines, ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations including compliance with State Operations Manual Appendix W for Critical Access Hospitals and Swing Beds.
  • Provide oversight to medical team for compliance with the districtโ€™s Medical Staff Bylaws.

Quality Improvement & Patient Outcomes
  • Lead quality initiatives that enhance patient safety, experience, and outcomes.
  • Monitor and analyze clinical performance metrics to drive data-driven decision-making.
  • Ensure evidence-based medical practices are consistently followed by all providers.
  • Collaborate with nursing leadership and department heads to streamline patient care coordination.

Financial Stewardship & Operational Efficiency
  • Work with executive leadership to optimize financial performance while maintaining high standards of care.
  • Drive operational efficiencies in medical workflows and care delivery models.

Qualifications:
  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from an accredited institution.
  • Board-certified in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, or Hospital Medicine.
  • Active Colorado medical license or eligibility to obtain one.
  • Minimum 5 years of clinical experience, with leadership or administrative experience preferred.
  • Current ATLS, BLS, PALS, and ACLS certifications (or ability to obtain upon hire).
  • Proven ability to lead and manage multi-disciplinary teams in a rural healthcare setting.
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.

Work Schedule & Compensation:
  • Additional stipend assignment to a full time Haxtun Health Physician
