What does a mid level Android developer do?

A Mid Level Android Developer designs, builds, tests, and maintains mobile applications for devices running the Android operating system. They typically work with Java or Kotlin, collaborate with cross-functional teams, and ensure that apps are user-friendly and efficient. Their responsibilities often include troubleshooting bugs, optimizing performance, and implementing new features based on user feedback. Mid level developers are expected to have a strong foundation in Android frameworks and tools, as well as experience with version control systems like Git.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mid level Android developer?

To thrive as a Mid Level Android Developer, you need proficiency in Java and Kotlin, experience with Android SDK, and a solid understanding of mobile app architecture and UI/UX principles, typically backed by a relevant degree or portfolio. Familiarity with tools such as Android Studio, Git, Firebase, and RESTful APIs is essential, and certifications in Android development can be advantageous. Job description

We are looking for a mid-level Android Engineer to join the SoundCloud Fan Monetization team. Our mission is to deepen the connection between fans and creators, building features that enhance how fans engage with and support their favorite artists. In this role, you will operate as part of a truly global team, collaborating regularly with engineers and product partners in London, Berlin, and elsewhere to deliver high-quality mobile experiences. You’ll focus almost exclusively on a modern Jetpack Compose stack, shipping high-impact features to millions of users worldwide.

This role offers a fantastic growth runway. You'll work in a forward-thinking environment that fully embraces AI acceleration to streamline development, while focusing on building clean, intuitive user interfaces.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and scale SoundCloud's fan-facing features across Android, focusing heavily on building clean, responsive UI and features using Kotlin and Jetpack Compose
  • Embrace and utilize advanced AI tools to safely, securely, and responsibly accelerate your coding workflows, code reviews, and testing
  • Partner closely with product, design, and data teams across our international offices (including London and Berlin) to define, build, and iterate on features
  • Participate in feature scoping, product experimentation (A/B testing), analytics integration, and agile delivery to optimize user engagement
  • Engage in code reviews and engineering best practices to maintain a high standard of performance, accessibility, and platform consistency
Experience and Background
  • 3+ years of experience building Android applications with a solid foundation in Kotlin and a strong familiarity with Jetpack Compose
  • You prefer looking forward; this role focuses entirely on our modern Kotlin/Jetpack Compose components, with no requirement to maintain or refactor legacy Java or outdated architectures
  • Excited about leveraging AI development assistants to optimize your productivity, code quality, and learning
  • Skilled at working within agile, distributed teams, proactively communicating, and breaking down problems into elegant, maintainable code
  • While your primary focus is Android, an openness or curiosity toward occasionally learning or collaborating across other tech stacks—such as iOS, Web, or Backend (Go)—is a welcome plus
  • You love music, mobile products, and the idea of helping creators build closer bonds with their audience

The salary range for this role is $140,000 - $165,000 annually. The final salary offered will be determined based on relative experience, skills, internal equity, and location. We also offer a generous total rewards program - read more about additional benefits and perks below!

About us
  • We are a multinational company with offices in the US (New York and Los Angeles), Germany (Berlin), and the UK (London)

  • We are deeply committed to ensuring diversity, equity and inclusion at all levels of our organization and fostering a community where everyone’s voice, perspective and experience is respected and heard

  • Robust 401k program
  • Employee Equity Plan
  • Generous professional development allowance
  • Interested in a gym membership, photography course or book? We have a Creativity and Wellness benefit!
  • Flexible vacation and public holiday policy where you can take up to 35 days of PTO annually
  • 16 paid weeks for all parents (birthing and non-birthing), regardless of gender, to welcome newborns, adopted and foster children
  • Various snacks, goodies, and 2 free lunches weekly when at the office
