Job Summary
The Substation Design Engineer (Mid-Level) is responsible for the coordination and execution of engineering for medium- and high-voltage air and gas-insulated substation projects, including new installations and modifications/upgrades of existing substations in the 34.5kV–550kV range.
Responsibilities
· Collect and analyze data from multiple disciplines to support engineering design and project execution.
· Coordinate and interface with multidisciplinary teams including civil, protection & control, automation, procurement, environmental, and compliance with NERC and utility standards.
· Attend pre-engineering and pre-construction meetings, and perform site visits for data gathering and job assessments. Document field conditions and apply findings to project design.
· Interact with clients, project managers, vendors, contractors, and internal teams to communicate project status and resolve technical issues.
· Lead and support engineering and design activities including, but not limited to:
o Substation / switchyard general arrangement, layout & elevations
o Grounding studies and design
o Equipment selections and reviewing vendor drawings/ specifications
o Equipment documentation reviews
o Auxiliary power (AC and DC) design
o Raceway system/trench & conduit design
o Bill of Materials
o Lightning protection analysis and design
o Illumination design
o Prepare new and modify existing relay drawings including relay panel arrangements, single lines, three lines, AC & DC schematics, equipment wiring, and relay panel wiring
o Review existing drawings/conditions and incorporate changes per customer requirements/standards
o Coordination with substation structures, transmission tower/Dead ends and equipment including line hardware, connectors, insulators, switches, and all types of conductors.
o Coordination with foundations, Grading Plan, Fence layout
· Review engineering deliverables to ensure compliance with project requirements, customer specifications, and applicable standards (NESC, NEC, IEEE, ANSI).
· Review and coordinate vendor submittals to ensure adherence to design requirements.
· Provide technical oversight by reviewing the work of engineers and designers for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with codes and standards.
· Support Project Engineers/Managers in reviewing design documentation prior to approval.
· Follow PNODE INC. quality processes and document control standards to ensure accurate and complete deliverables. Identify risks related to safety, reliability, cost, or schedule and recommend solutions.
Qualifications / Required Skills
· Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (required).
· Minimum 4+ years of substation engineering experience or 8+ years of related transmission/substation experience.
· Strong knowledge of substation design and engineering studies, including:
o Grounding calculations
o Cable ampacity and voltage drop calculations
o AC/DC load studies and equipment sizing
o Battery and battery charger sizing
o Lightning protection analysis
o Illumination studies
· Knowledge of Microsoft Office.
· Knowledge of AutoCAD Electrical.
· Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
· Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills with the ability to work independently.
Additional Requirements
· Travel up to 30% within the United States.
· Ability to work independently and lead project efforts with minimal supervision.
· Must have authorization to work in the United States.
