What You Will Do
The Intelligence and Systems Group (A-2) provides the opportunity for you to collaborate with a team of analytical and technical experts in the areas of foreign threat reduction, counter-weapons of mass destruction, counterterrorism, and foreign nuclear systems. Our staff focuses upon a broad spectrum of nuclear and non-nuclear system applications impacting U.S. national security. Working under the auspices of the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) Field Intelligence Element (FIE), you will have the opportunity to lead scientific or technical research and development (R&D) in support of the Laboratory's mission, which may include leading a research team, expanding on existing technical efforts, developing novel techniques or capabilities, and analyzing data or outcomes from theoretical or experimental research that shapes national security decisions at the highest levels of the U.S. government.
With great breadth in the programs supported by A-2, it is not essential for candidates to have expertise in all technical areas of interest. Depending on the specific skill set of the selected candidate, there will be opportunities to work in one or more of the following areas:

• Respond to threats and provide analytical and/or technical support.
• Research, analyze, and produce intelligence products regarding emerging disruptive technologies impacting U.S. national security.
• Research, analyze, and produce intelligence products characterizing nuclear-related materials, nuclear security, and/or nonproliferation.
• Research, analyze, and provide analytical and/or technical support to nuclear and/or non-nuclear systems for U.S. national security.

There are opportunities for technically advanced analytical work performed here to be published in journals or conference proceedings.
Apply your analytic expertise in one or more of these areas:

• Nuclear topics: weapon design, weaponization, testing, engineering, improvised devices, security, trafficking, materials, forensics, fuel cycle, weapon delivery, facilities and infrastructure, policy, proliferation, and strategic trade control.
• Technology topics: artificial intelligence, biotechnology, quantum technology, semiconductors and microelectronics, space technology, advanced materials, advanced manufacturing, advanced communications, and other fields.

Collaborate across LANL, other DOE laboratories, the Intelligence Community, and government stakeholders. You will work with the nation's top scientists and intelligence professionals in feedback-driven teams that prize creativity, diverse perspectives, and rigorous analytical thinking.
Drive mission growth and innovation by securing internal or external funding; lead proposal development efforts, supporting analytical scope of work for yourself and/or your team.
Mentor and lead junior staff and peers, providing analytic direction and fostering professional development while maintaining tradecraft standards demanded by the Intelligence Community and U.S. government.
This position will be filled at the Scientist-3 (Sci-3) or Scientist-4 (Sci-4) level depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities outlined below will be assigned if the candidate is deemed proficient and hired at the Sci-4 level.
Scientist-3 ($128,000 - $215,900)
You are expected to:

• Contribute to the LANL FIE by leading in communicating results of technical R&D, including (but not limited to) publications, presentations, reports, intellectual property, technical products, etc.
• Influences organizational, project, and program strategies and directions. Leads technical decision-making at task level within a project. Makes decisions and/or recommendations that influence the achievement of key programmatic objectives.
• Uses project assignments to further organizational goals. Develops and implements project management plans, including scope, schedule, and budget, for small to moderate projects and/or major project tasks. Defines deliverables at project or major task level.
• Acquires internal/external funding for self and optimally others through leading development of small to moderate proposals.
• Actively participates in professional societies, National Nuclear Security Administration/Department of Energy Complex interactions, special assignments, and/or external collaborations. May participate in external working groups and/or assist in organizing meetings and colloquia.
• Understand and adhere to all LANL and other regulatory guidance and governance specific to foreign visit and activities laws and regulations.

Scientist-4 ($153,600 - $266,500)
In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level the successful candidate will also:

• Recognized as a technical expert in area of specialization. Ability to translate national needs into technological objectives for scientific research and development (R&D) in support of Lab missions, which may include applying scientific principles under the scientific method to address technical problems, developing novel techniques or principles, and analyzing data or outcomes from theoretical or experimental research.
• Develops and implements project management plans for moderate to large high-risk projects. Leads the development of scope, schedule, and budget and defines deliverables at project or program level. Manages moderate to large, complex and/or high-risk projects, involving multiple tasks, capabilities, and organizations. Acquires internal/external funding for self and others.
• Integrates broad scientific/technical/engineering knowledge across disciplines and/or people to develop specialized, state-of-the-art solutions for an extensive and diverse range of complex and/or ambiguous problems where analysis requires in-depth evaluation of intangibles.
• Identifies, promotes, and develops new technical capabilities within Laboratory. Influences industry standards and procedures and guides their application to projects and programs.

What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:

• Ability to obtain Q and SCI clearances; this requires U.S. citizenship.
• Thorough knowledge and experience in one or more technical research disciplines related to A-2's mission.
• Thorough knowledge and experience in the U.S. intelligence and/or counterintelligence communities.
• Thorough knowledge and experience in developing and implementing technical research and development projects, including the formulation and testing of hypotheses, investigation of alternative solutions, and recommendation of solutions to technical problems.
• Demonstrated experience adhering to scientific integrity, safely and effectively conducting technical research and development, presenting work to technical and non-technical audiences.
• Demonstrated effective communication skills with team members, colleagues/peers, direct reports supervisors and support staff, and limited sponsor contact, both orally and in writing.

Additional Job Requirements for (Sci-4):

• Advanced knowledge and proven experience in one or more technical research and disciplines related to A-2's mission.
• Advanced knowledge and proven ability in developing and implementing technical research and development projects, including the formulation and testing of hypotheses, investigation of alternative solutions, and recommendation of solutions to technical problems.
• Ability to develop and implement project management plans for moderate to large high-risk projects, lead the development of scope, schedule, and budget and define deliverables at project or program level.
• Ability to coordinate, mentor, and direct the work of technical staff.

Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a Master's Degree in a STEM field from an accredited college or university and 6 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Master's Degree in a STEM field from an accredited college or university and 12 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications:
Demonstrated experience in one or more of A-2's mission areas:

• Insatiable curiosity, adaptability, and relentless analytical rigor, bringing both technical depth and the ability to address emerging national security challenges.
• Experience working with the U.S. Intelligence Community, especially experience conducting all-source analysis on nuclear or emerging technology analysis topics.
• Experience writing for and briefing high-level decision makers.
• Experience building programs and developing a customer base.
• Experience handling and protecting classified data.
• Experience working with a multi-disciplinary team.
• Foreign language skills.
• Active Q and TS/SCI clearance.

Work Environment:
Work Location : The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q/SCI (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
