What are the highest paying research jobs?
What is a Microbiome Research job?
A Microbiome Research job involves studying the diverse communities of microorganisms (bacteria, fungi, viruses, and more) that live in various environments, including the human body, soil, and water. Researchers in this field analyze how microbiomes influence health, disease, and ecosystems using advanced techniques like DNA sequencing and bioinformatics. They may work in academic institutions, healthcare, agriculture, or biotechnology sectors to develop new treatments, probiotics, or environmental solutions. The role often includes laboratory experiments, data analysis, and collaboration with interdisciplinary teams.

Job description
The University of Chicago's Biological Sciences Division (BSD) invites applications for a visionary leader in microbiome research to continue the legacy of scientific discovery and pioneering therapeutic applications at the Duchossois Family Institute (henceforth referred to as "The Institute"). Leveraging the vibrant research programs, robust core platforms, and comprehensively annotated commensal strain bank developed at the Institute, the successful candidate will implement a vision for the next phase of fundamental research and therapeutic applications for this nationally eminent Institute. With 22 affiliated faculty and world-class core facilities, The Institute has emerged as a national leader for microbiome research and the first academic entity with an FDA-approved facility for the manufacture of microbiome-derived therapeutics for human use.
Academic rank will be commensurate with accomplishments, with a primary faculty appointment in any of several departments within the BSD, and options for secondary appointments throughout the University of Chicago. Compensation is dependent upon qualifications. This position is benefits-eligible. The University of Chicago offers a wide range of benefits programs and resources for eligible employees, including health, retirement, and paid time off. Information about the benefit offerings can be found in the Benefits Guidebook.
The Institute is supported by state-of-the-art technology platforms, including gnotobiotics, metabolomics, metagenomics, and a new current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) facility to manufacture live biotherapeutic products for clinical trials of microbiome optimization. The Director will articulate a vision for the Institute and lead a comprehensive investigation of the interactions among the metagenome, microbiome, immune system, and human health that builds upon these research platforms and aims to translate laboratory discoveries into novel FDA-approved clinical therapies.
The Institute combines the advantages of a major academic medical center with expertise in venture creation and technology commercialization at the Polsky Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation (https://polsky.uchicago.edu/page/about). Experienced staff from the Polsky Center help connect the latest scientific findings with leaders in business, potential investors, and entrepreneurs.
Prior to the start of employment, qualified applicants must: 1) have a medical doctorate or equivalent, or PhD or equivalent, and for clinicians 2) hold or be eligible for medical licensure in the State of Illinois and 3) be board-certified or board-eligible through the appropriate specialty board.
We seek a PhD, MD, MD/PhD or equivalent scientist with a record of creative and impactful research, visionary leadership, and experience leading academic programs and commercial partnerships.
We especially encourage applications from mid-career and senior-level investigators with demonstrated leadership skills and experience leading team efforts or building programs. Likewise, scientists or physician-scientists with industry experience, or experience in venture creation or industrial partnerships are encouraged to apply.
