A Microbiome Research job involves studying the diverse communities of microorganisms (bacteria, fungi, viruses, and more) that live in various environments, including the human body, soil, and water. Researchers in this field analyze how microbiomes influence health, disease, and ecosystems using advanced techniques like DNA sequencing and bioinformatics. They may work in academic institutions, healthcare, agriculture, or biotechnology sectors to develop new treatments, probiotics, or environmental solutions. The role often includes laboratory experiments, data analysis, and collaboration with interdisciplinary teams.
In a Microbiome Research role, your typical day often involves designing and conducting experiments, processing biological samples, and analyzing sequencing data. You will collaborate closely with colleagues in bioinformatics, clinical research, and other scientific disciplines to interpret results and integrate findings into broader research projects. Effective teamwork and regular communication are key, as many projects require cross-disciplinary expertise and joint problem-solving. This collaborative environment not only enhances the research process but also offers valuable opportunities for professional growth and knowledge sharing.
To thrive in Microbiome Research, you need a strong background in microbiology, molecular biology, and data analysis, typically supported by an advanced degree (MSc or PhD) in a life science discipline. Familiarity with laboratory and bioinformatics tools such as next-generation sequencing (NGS), PCR, and software for analyzing large genetic datasets is often required. Excellent communication, critical thinking, and collaboration skills distinguish successful researchers in this field. These capabilities are vital for designing rigorous experiments, interpreting complex data, and contributing effectively to multidisciplinary research teams.

Function/Duties of PositionThis is an NIH T32 training grant-supported postdoctoral research position. The successful candidate will work independently to investigate the biochemical and genetic mechanisms supporting posttranscriptional gene regulation in the human oral pathobiont Streptococcus mutans. He/she will be responsible for most of the planning, implementation, and data interpretation associated with his/her research. Thus, the candidate will be expected to work independently with attention to detail and strong record-keeping. The goal is to understand how protein-protein interactions control mRNA targeting and processing by the S. mutans RNase J complex. To achieve this goal, we have developed a unique genetic system to augment in vivo purification of specific RNase J heteromeric complex isotypes present in the cell. Typical laboratory techniques often require expertise with northern blot, western blot, protein expression/purification, coimmunoprecipitation, gene expression analysis, targeted mutagenesis, and microscopy.
Demonstrable prior experience with the human microbiome and/or synthetic biology approaches is preferred. As a postdoctoral scholar, the candidate may also be involved with the training and supervision of students and junior staff as well as play an integral role in the management and supply ordering for the laboratory. Assistance with the development and preparation of grants/manuscripts will also be expected.
