What is an MFT professor?

MFT professors are educators who specialize in Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT), teaching courses and conducting research in this field at colleges or universities. They are often licensed therapists themselves and prepare students for professional practice as marriage and family therapists. In addition to teaching, MFT professors may supervise clinical training, mentor students, and contribute to academic scholarship through research and publications. Their expertise helps shape the next generation of therapists and advance the discipline.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an MFT professor?

To thrive as an MFT Professor, you need advanced knowledge in marriage and family therapy, a doctoral degree in a related field, and a strong research background. Familiarity with learning management systems (LMS), clinical supervision tools, and accreditation standards like COAMFTE is typically required. Exceptional communication, mentorship, and cultural competency are vital soft skills for engaging students and future therapists. These skills ensure high-quality instruction, effective student development, and adherence to professional standards in the field.

What are some typical challenges MFT professors face when balancing teaching, research, and clinical supervision responsibilities?

MFT Professors often juggle multiple responsibilities, including teaching courses, conducting research, and supervising clinical training for students. Balancing these demands can be challenging, especially during peak academic periods or when managing active research projects. Effective time management and clear communication with colleagues are essential to ensure that teaching quality, research productivity, and student supervision all receive appropriate attention. Many institutions also provide mentorship or collaborative opportunities to help new faculty members navigate these challenges.

Job description

At Curana Health, we’re on a mission to radically improve the health, happiness, and dignity of older adults—and we’re looking for passionate people to help us do it.

As a national leader in value-based care, we offer senior living communities and skilled nursing facilities a wide range of solutions (including on-site primary care services, Accountable Care Organizations, and Medicare Advantage Special Needs Plans) proven to enhance health outcomes, streamline operations, and create new financial opportunities.

Founded in 2021, we’ve grown quickly—now serving 200,000+ seniors in 1,500+ communities across 32 states. Our team includes more than 1,000 clinicians alongside care coordinators, analysts, operators, and professionals from all backgrounds, all working together to deliver high-quality, proactive solutions for senior living operators and those they care for.

If you’re looking to make a meaningful impact on the senior healthcare landscape, you’re in the right place—and we look forward to working with you.

For more information about our company, visit CuranaHealth.com.

At Curana Health, we believe every resident deserves not only excellent medical care, but also compassionate support for their emotional and psychological well-being. We’re looking for a licensed mental health professional who shares that vision and is ready to make a meaningful difference in the lives of seniors living in long-term care communities.

In this role, you’ll provide individualized therapy and counseling that helps residents maintain dignity, improve quality of life, and find comfort and connection through every stage of care. You’ll also be a vital partner to our care teams, ensuring residents receive holistic, person-centered support.

(LCSW, Psychologist, LPC, LMFT, or LMHC)

  • Be a trusted resource for residents: Conduct thorough psychological assessments and develop personalized treatment plans tailored to their unique needs.

  • Provide meaningful therapy: Offer individual counseling for depression, anxiety, grief, adjustment disorders, and cognitive changes using evidence-based techniques.

  • Partner across disciplines: Work closely with physicians, nurses, and facility staff to ensure residents receive seamless, integrated care.

  • Support in times of need: Respond to emotional or psychological crises with immediate intervention and support.

  • Ensure quality and compliance: Keep accurate, confidential records and follow ethical, state, and federal guidelines.

  • Embrace technology: Navigate multiple electronic medical records with confidence and accuracy.

What Makes This Role Rewarding
  • Purpose-driven work: Your expertise directly enhances residents’ emotional well-being and overall quality of life.

  • Collaborative environment: Be part of a dedicated, interdisciplinary team that values your input and clinical judgment.

  • Diverse impact: No two days are the same—you’ll encounter a wide variety of situations, challenges, and opportunities to grow as a clinician.

  • Resident connection: Build meaningful, ongoing relationships with seniors and their families.

  • Education: Master’s or Doctoral degree in Social Work, Psychology, Counseling, or a related field.
  • Licensure: Current and valid state licensure to practice independently as a Psychologist (Ph.D/Psy.D.), Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW/LISW), Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC), Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT).
  • Experience: Previous experience in a mental health role, preferably in a geriatric or long-term care setting. Experience working with elderly populations and understanding age-related mental health issues is highly preferred.
  • Skills: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; ability to build rapport with residents and families; strong assessment, diagnostic, and therapeutic skills.

This role requires travel to and from one or more assigned facilities. Depending on the amount of travel required, Curana may in future determine that a valid driver’s license, current auto insurance, and an acceptable driving record are required. If so, you will be provided with thirty (30) days notice of this requirement. From that time forward, please be advised that Periodic motor vehicle (MVR) checks may be conducted as a condition of, and/or for, continued employment.

We’re thrilled to announce that Curana Health has been named the 147th fastest growing, privately owned company in the nation on Inc. magazine’s prestigious Inc. 5000 list. Curana also ranked 16th in the “Healthcare & Medical” industry category and 21st in Texas.

This recognition underscores Curana Health’s impact in transforming senior housing by supporting operator stability and ensuring seniors receive the high-quality care they deserve.
