Metsim information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Metsim Process Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Metsim Process Engineer, you need a solid background in chemical or metallurgical engineering, strong analytical skills, and experience with process modeling. Proficiency in using Metsim simulation software and knowledge of related tools like Excel or other process simulators are typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication help you interpret data and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams. These skills are crucial for optimizing plant processes, ensuring accurate simulations, and supporting operational decision-making.

What are the typical responsibilities of a Metsim process engineer and how do they contribute to project success?

As a Metsim process engineer, your daily responsibilities revolve around using the Metsim simulation software to model, analyze, and optimize metallurgical and chemical processes. You'll work closely with multidisciplinary teams, including plant operators, project managers, and other engineers, to develop accurate flowsheets, conduct mass and energy balances, and propose process improvements. Your work ensures that projects are both technically sound and economically viable, often requiring you to troubleshoot models and communicate complex findings clearly. Collaboration and attention to detail are key, as your simulations directly influence operational decisions and project outcomes.

What is a Metsim engineer?

A Metsim engineer is a professional who specializes in using the METSIM software, which is a comprehensive process modeling tool widely used in the mining, metallurgy, and chemical industries. These engineers use Metsim to simulate, analyze, and optimize complex processes such as material flow, energy usage, and production efficiency. Their expertise helps organizations design better processes, troubleshoot issues, and improve overall plant performance. Metsim engineers often work closely with process engineers, plant managers, and other technical staff to implement and refine process solutions.

Who We Are Looking For
Phoenix Tailings is seeking a Senior Chemical Process Engineer who thrives at the intersection of lab work and industrial process development. In this role, you'll focus on designing, optimizing, and scaling solvent extraction systems to separate and refine rare earth elements - a cornerstone process in our clean production pathway. This is a hands-on, impact-driven role where your contributions will directly accelerate our mission to establish a domestic, sustainable supply of critical materials.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Execute solvent extraction process development for rare earth element separation, from bench to pilot scale
  • Design and operate solvent extraction experiments, evaluating efficiency, selectivity, and stability of reagent systems
  • Assist in scaling up processes through data analysis, process modeling, and mass/energy balance development
  • Contribute to the design of pilot-scale equipment including mixer-settlers, columns, or centrifugal contactors
  • Analyze experimental results to recommend design or operating condition changes that improve process performance
  • Develop and maintain process documentation including SOPs, PFDs, and process data logs
  • Support technology transfer from R&D to operations, including commissioning, startup, and troubleshooting
  • Maintain a strong focus on safety, chemical handling, and environmental stewardship in all aspects of process work
  • Collaborate with a cross-functional team of chemists, metallurgists, and engineers to deliver on project milestones
Qualifications:
  • M.S. or B.S. in Chemical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, or related field with 5+ years of industrial experience
  • Hands-on experience with solvent extraction for rare earth or critical metal separation
  • Solid understanding of phase separation dynamics, reagent selection, and extraction circuit design
  • Demonstrated ability to operate lab and pilot-scale chemical processes safely and effectively
  • Familiarity with process simulation and modeling tools (e.g., METSIM, Aspen, or similar)
  • Strong analytical and data interpretation skills with an experimental mindset
  • Experience working in a fast-paced, startup, or R&D-intensive environment is a plus
  • Excellent communication and technical documentation skills
We offer a competitive compensation package that is based on expertise. We also offer the following benefits:
