What is a metrology laser tracker?

Metrology Laser Trackers are precision measurement instruments used to accurately determine the position of objects in three-dimensional space. They use a laser beam and a spherical reflector to track and measure distances with high accuracy, often within microns. These devices are commonly used in industries such as aerospace, automotive, and manufacturing for tasks like aligning machinery, inspecting parts, and quality control. Operators use specialized software to collect and analyze the measurement data, ensuring components meet strict tolerances.

How does a metrology laser tracker collaborate with engineering and manufacturing teams during a project?

As a Metrology Laser Tracker professional, you'll work closely with engineering and manufacturing teams to ensure precise measurements of components and assemblies. You may be responsible for setting up the laser tracker equipment, performing alignment and calibration tasks, and delivering detailed measurement reports that inform design adjustments or quality control decisions. Effective communication is essential, as you'll often interpret technical data for engineers and suggest solutions to potential issues. This collaborative environment promotes knowledge sharing and contributes to achieving strict manufacturing tolerances and quality standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a metrology laser tracker?

To thrive as a Metrology Laser Tracker, you need expertise in precision measurement, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), and a solid understanding of engineering drawings, often supported by technical training or certification in metrology. Proficiency with laser tracker systems (such as Leica, FARO, or API), metrology software, and data analysis tools is typically required. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are essential soft skills in this role. These skills ensure accurate measurements, reliable data reporting, and seamless collaboration with engineering and manufacturing teams to maintain quality standards.

What is the difference between Metrology Laser Tracker vs CMM Programmer?

AspectMetrology Laser TrackerCMM Programmer
CredentialsCalibration certifications, technical trainingCoordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) programming certifications, technical training
Work EnvironmentLarge-scale industrial, construction sites, manufacturing facilitiesManufacturing plants, quality control labs
Industry UsagePrecision measurement, large part inspection, alignmentPart inspection, quality assurance, detailed dimensional analysis

Both roles require technical skills and industry-specific certifications. While a Metrology Laser Tracker is used for large-scale measurements in industrial environments, a CMM Programmer focuses on programming and operating coordinate measuring machines for detailed part inspection. Understanding these differences helps employers and professionals choose the right expertise for their measurement needs.

Job description

Anduril Industries is a defense technology company with a mission to transform U.S. and allied military capabilities with advanced technology. By bringing the expertise, technology, and business model of the 21st century's most innovative companies to the defense industry, Anduril is changing how military systems are designed, built and sold. Anduril's family of systems is powered by Lattice OS, an AI-powered operating system that turns thousands of data streams into a realtime, 3D command and control center. As the world enters an era of strategic competition, Anduril is committed to bringing cutting-edge autonomy, AI, computer vision, sensor fusion, and networking technology to the military in months, not years.
ABOUT THE SITE
Anduril, a leader in autonomous systems and weapons manufacturing, is building Arsenal-1, its first hyperscale manufacturing facility, just south of Columbus, Ohio in Pickaway County. Arsenal-1 is redefining the scale and speed that autonomous systems and weapons can be produced for the United States and its allies and partners. This is a monumental and essential step toward rebuilding America's defense industrial base, strengthening America's warfighting capabilities, and enhancing deterrence amid rising international threats.
ABOUT THE TEAM
We are looking for a highly skilled Metrology Specialist to program, optimize, and lead complex inspections across a wide variety of products that we design and develop. In this role you will write, debug, and optimize inspection programs across contact and non-contact systems, troubleshoot the most difficult measurement problems, and help shape how the lab does its work. As the Metrology lab grows, you will work across a range of equipment - Portable CMM, CNC/fixed CMM, CT scanner, laser tracker, and optical systems from manufacturers such as Hexagon, Zeiss, Keyence, and LK Metrology - supporting incoming quality inspections, internally manufactured components, quality investigations, and root cause analysis, while mentoring other members of the team.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
  • Program and operate metrology equipment across contact and non-contact systems to validate that parts meet requirements.
  • Write, debug, and optimize inspection programs to improve accuracy, repeatability, and cycle time.
  • Troubleshoot complex measurement issues - determining why an inspection is failing or producing inconsistent results - and resolve process-level problems.
  • Design, build, and validate holding fixtures used on the CMMs.
  • Work closely with the Quality Engineering team to support problem-solving, root cause analysis, and product design.
  • Define best-practice inspection and reporting strategies with cross-functional teams.
  • Maintain and improve lab equipment and processes (calibration, cleanliness, best practices), reducing downtime and ensuring data reliability.
  • Train and mentor other metrology team members and serve as the go-to resource for difficult measurement problems.
  • Help ensure compliance with industry standards (e.g., AS9100, ISO 17025).

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • 5+ years of metrology experience, including programming CMMs.
  • Hands-on experience with at least three different types of metrology equipment (CNC CMM, portable CMM, laser tracker, large-volume or automated 3D scanners, optical comparator, etc.).
  • Proficiency with CMM software; PolyWorks preferred (PC-DMIS, Calypso, Verisurf, MCosmos, or equivalent acceptable with the ability to learn PolyWorks quickly).
  • Excellent understanding of GD&T (ASME Y14.5).
  • Experience designing and building holding fixtures for CMMs.
  • Proficiency with precision measuring equipment (micrometers, height gauges, and other hand tools).
  • Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Associate's degree or technical training.
  • Experience with advanced or specialized inspection methods, including NDT.
  • Experience with CT scanning and automated or large-volume 3D scanning.
  • Experience with PolyWorks|DataLoop or similar metrology data management platforms.
  • Familiarity with AS9100 or ISO 17025 quality systems.
