What Is a Metrology Engineer?

A metrology engineer, or metrologist, specializes in science or engineering-related measurements. Their duties may include calibrating instruments, designing new tools or systems of measurement, interpreting data, or researching the science of measuring. Many subfields work with metrologists, including mechanical engineering. There are two levels of metrology certification available through the Coordinate Metrology Society (CMS).

What do metrology engineers do?

Metrology engineers are responsible for developing, maintaining, and calibrating measurement systems and instruments to ensure accuracy and precision in manufacturing and quality control processes. They analyze measurement data, troubleshoot equipment, and implement standards to meet industry specifications, often using tools like coordinate measuring machines (CMMs) and calibration software.

What engineer makes $500,000 a year?

Highly experienced engineers in specialized fields such as petroleum, aerospace, or software engineering can earn $500,000 or more annually, often through a combination of base salary, bonuses, and stock options. These roles typically require advanced skills, extensive experience, and often involve leadership or executive responsibilities.

What does a Metrology Engineer do?

A Metrology Engineer specializes in the science of measurement, ensuring that instruments and processes produce precise and accurate results. Their responsibilities include calibrating measuring equipment, developing measurement methods, and analyzing data to support quality control and product development. They work across industries such as manufacturing, aerospace, and electronics to maintain standards and compliance. Metrology Engineers also contribute to troubleshooting measurement issues and improving measurement systems to enhance efficiency and reliability.

What is the difference between Metrology Engineer vs Quality Control Engineer?

AspectMetrology EngineerQuality Control Engineer

We are looking for a Metrology Engineer to join our team in one of today's most exciting technologies. This role will report to the Senior Manager, Metrology and will be based in Fremont, CA. This is a fully on-site, in factory role.
Responsibilities:
  • Lead metrology support for capacity expansion projects: specify, justify, and implement metrology equipment for new lines, line duplications, and line moves.
  • Conduct Measurement System Analyses (MSA/Gage R&R, bias, linearity, stability) for new and existing gauges; drive improvement or replacement of inadequate systems.
  • Specify, select, and validate production-ready measurement systems (CMMs, optical/vision systems, laser/line scanners, profilometers, inline gauges, leak/flow/pressure test systems, electrical test stands).
  • Support day-to-day production: troubleshoot measurement issues, resolve non-conformances, participate in root cause analyses, and support corrective and preventive actions.
  • Provide design-for-metrology input to product and process engineering, including GD&T, tolerancing, and fixturing for manufacturability and inspection efficiency.
  • Collaborate with suppliers to define incoming inspection requirements, qualify supplier measurement systems, and address dimensional and performance issues.
  • Develop and maintain metrology work instructions, calibration procedures, and standard operating methods for technicians and operators.
  • Train and mentor production, quality, and engineering teams in GD&T, measurement techniques, gauge use, and data interpretation.
  • Monitor and analyze production measurement data (SPC, Cp/Cpk, trend analysis) to detect drifts, reduce variation, and support continuous improvement and yield enhancement.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Industrial, Chemical, Materials, or related Engineering field; Physics or similar considered with strong relevant experience.
  • 1-2 years of metrology, dimensional engineering, or test engineering experience in a production/manufacturing environment (automotive, aerospace, energy, electronics, fuel cells, or similar)
  • Hands-on experience with factory measurement systems (CMM, optical/vision systems, laser gauges, height gauges, air gauges, surface/profile measurement, leak/flow/pressure/electrical test equipment).
  • Proven experience running and interpreting MSA/Gage R&R and using outcomes to improve gauges and processes.
