What Is a Metrology Engineer?

A metrology engineer, or metrologist, specializes in science or engineering-related measurements. Their duties may include calibrating instruments, designing new tools or systems of measurement, interpreting data, or researching the science of measuring. Many subfields work with metrologists, including mechanical engineering. There are two levels of metrology certification available through the Coordinate Metrology Society (CMS).

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Metrology Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Metrology Engineer, you need a strong background in physics, mathematics, and engineering principles, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with measurement instruments, calibration systems, and software like MATLAB or LabVIEW is commonly required, with certifications such as ASQ Certified Calibration Technician considered beneficial. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication skills help you excel in troubleshooting and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams. These competencies ensure precise measurement processes, maintain quality standards, and drive continuous improvement in manufacturing or laboratory environments.

What are some typical challenges Metrology Engineers face when integrating new measurement technologies into existing manufacturing processes?

Metrology Engineers often encounter challenges such as ensuring compatibility between new measurement tools and legacy equipment, maintaining calibration standards, and minimizing production downtime during implementation. They must also train staff on updated protocols and troubleshoot unexpected variances in measurement data. Successfully addressing these challenges requires strong problem-solving skills, meticulous attention to detail, and effective communication with cross-functional teams including production, quality, and maintenance departments.

What does a Metrology Engineer do?

A Metrology Engineer specializes in the science of measurement, ensuring that instruments and processes produce precise and accurate results. Their responsibilities include calibrating measuring equipment, developing measurement methods, and analyzing data to support quality control and product development. They work across industries such as manufacturing, aerospace, and electronics to maintain standards and compliance. Metrology Engineers also contribute to troubleshooting measurement issues and improving measurement systems to enhance efficiency and reliability.

What is the difference between Metrology Engineer vs Quality Control Engineer?

AspectMetrology EngineerQuality Control Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Engineering, certifications in metrology or calibrationBachelor's in Engineering, certifications in quality assurance or control
Work EnvironmentLaboratories, calibration labs, manufacturing plantsManufacturing lines, inspection facilities, production environments
Employer & Industry UsageManufacturing, aerospace, automotive, electronicsManufacturing, consumer goods, pharmaceuticals, automotive
Common Search & Comparison IntentUnderstanding technical calibration roles, measurement accuracyEnsuring product quality, defect prevention

Metrology Engineers focus on precise measurement, calibration, and maintaining measurement systems, ensuring accuracy in manufacturing processes. Quality Control Engineers oversee product inspections and testing to ensure standards are met. While both roles aim to improve product quality, Metrology Engineers specialize in measurement systems, whereas Quality Control Engineers focus on final product quality assurance.

Job description

A Day in Your Life at MKS:
MKS Systems Irvine is growing very rapidly with significant strategic investments in the development and fabrication of cutting-edge, high precision optics, opto-mechanical assemblies, fiber optic module assemblies, and systems. To manufacture these products, Systems Irvine is seeking individuals like you to join our team as Principal Optical Engineer.
In this position, you will provide technical leadership in the design and development of complex optical systems by coordinating cross-functional development activities. If you have a passion for working with cutting-edge technology, this is the role for you!
You Will Make an Impact By:
  • Architect and design complex optical paths and hybrid systems. Utilize industry-standard modeling software to simulate beam propagation in both free-space and fiber-optic configurations.
  • Define and select active and passive optical components, including laser diodes, AOMs, WDMs, isolators, etc. Manage integration of these components with mechanical and electronic control systems.
  • Lead and work the physical realization of designs on the optical bench. Build, align, and test optical components and systems, including precision alignment and fiber splicing, to verify performance and quality.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams and interact with suppliers to transition prototypes into scalable, manufacturable products.

Skills You Bring:
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Physics, or equivalent; graduate coursework preferred.
  • 8+ years of related industry experience in optical product design and development
  • Strong foundation in optics and photonics, including beam propagation, fiber-optic principles, and laser fundamentals, with proficiency in optical design and analysis using Zemax or equivalent tools.
  • Skill in functional demonstration and prototyping, including rapid optical setup, iterative design refinement, troubleshooting, and validation.
  • Hands-on experience with optical alignment, optical metrology, and common test instruments (beam profilers, OSAs, power meters, interferometers).
  • Familiarity with systems integration and working knowledge of mechanical tolerances, opto-mechanical hardware, and electronic control interfaces.
  • Effective communication skills for working cross-functionally and documenting technical work.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions:
  • Office and laboratory work is required, with regular work in a cleanroom environment. Wearing of Personal Protective Equipment as well as cleanroom garb is required
  • Must be able to lift, move, or position equipment up to 35 pounds while working in a laboratory environment
  • Noise level in the laboratory environment can temporarily be elevated, but does not typically require PPE
  • Travel Requirements: Up to 5-15% Travel is required, including international travel
