What is a metrology associate?

Metrology Associates are professionals who specialize in the science of measurement. They are responsible for calibrating, testing, and maintaining precision instruments to ensure accuracy and compliance with industry standards. Metrology Associates typically work in laboratories, manufacturing, or quality control environments, supporting engineers and scientists by verifying that equipment is functioning correctly. Their work is crucial in industries such as pharmaceuticals, aerospace, automotive, and electronics, where precise measurements are essential for product quality and safety.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a metrology associate?

To thrive as a Metrology Associate, you need a solid understanding of measurement science, calibration techniques, and quality assurance principles, often supported by an associate degree in a technical field or relevant certifications. Familiarity with calibration software, precision measurement instruments, and regulatory standards such as ISO/IEC 17025 is essential. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and strong documentation skills are standout soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure the accuracy and reliability of measurements, which are critical for maintaining quality and compliance in manufacturing and laboratory environments.

How does a metrology associate typically collaborate with other departments in a manufacturing environment?

Metrology Associates often work closely with quality assurance, engineering, and production teams to ensure that measurement equipment is calibrated and processes meet regulatory standards. They may assist engineers in troubleshooting measurement issues, provide calibration data for quality audits, and support production by verifying that instruments used in manufacturing are performing accurately. Collaboration is essential, as their input helps maintain product quality and compliance, and often involves participating in cross-functional meetings or problem-solving sessions.

What is the difference between Metrology Associate vs Calibration Technician?

Job description

Anduril Industries is a defense technology company with a mission to transform U.S. and allied military capabilities with advanced technology. By bringing the expertise, technology, and business model of the 21st century's most innovative companies to the defense industry, Anduril is changing how military systems are designed, built and sold. Anduril's family of systems is powered by Lattice OS, an AI-powered operating system that turns thousands of data streams into a realtime, 3D command and control center. As the world enters an era of strategic competition, Anduril is committed to bringing cutting-edge autonomy, AI, computer vision, sensor fusion, and networking technology to the military in months, not years.
ABOUT THE SITE
Anduril, a leader in autonomous systems and weapons manufacturing, is building Arsenal-1, its first hyperscale manufacturing facility, just south of Columbus, Ohio in Pickaway County. Arsenal-1 is redefining the scale and speed that autonomous systems and weapons can be produced for the United States and its allies and partners. This is a monumental and essential step toward rebuilding America's defense industrial base, strengthening America's warfighting capabilities, and enhancing deterrence amid rising international threats.
ABOUT THE TEAM
We are looking for a highly skilled Metrology Specialist to program, optimize, and lead complex inspections across a wide variety of products that we design and develop. In this role you will write, debug, and optimize inspection programs across contact and non-contact systems, troubleshoot the most difficult measurement problems, and help shape how the lab does its work. As the Metrology lab grows, you will work across a range of equipment - Portable CMM, CNC/fixed CMM, CT scanner, laser tracker, and optical systems from manufacturers such as Hexagon, Zeiss, Keyence, and LK Metrology - supporting incoming quality inspections, internally manufactured components, quality investigations, and root cause analysis, while mentoring other members of the team.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
  • Program and operate metrology equipment across contact and non-contact systems to validate that parts meet requirements.
  • Write, debug, and optimize inspection programs to improve accuracy, repeatability, and cycle time.
  • Troubleshoot complex measurement issues - determining why an inspection is failing or producing inconsistent results - and resolve process-level problems.
  • Design, build, and validate holding fixtures used on the CMMs.
  • Work closely with the Quality Engineering team to support problem-solving, root cause analysis, and product design.
  • Define best-practice inspection and reporting strategies with cross-functional teams.
  • Maintain and improve lab equipment and processes (calibration, cleanliness, best practices), reducing downtime and ensuring data reliability.
  • Train and mentor other metrology team members and serve as the go-to resource for difficult measurement problems.
  • Help ensure compliance with industry standards (e.g., AS9100, ISO 17025).
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, which requires regular interaction with production and manufacturing stakeholders and frequently working directly on the production floor.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • 5+ years of metrology experience, including programming CMMs.
  • Hands-on experience with at least three different types of metrology equipment (CNC CMM, portable CMM, laser tracker, large-volume or automated 3D scanners, optical comparator, etc.).
  • Proficiency with CMM software; PolyWorks preferred (PC-DMIS, Calypso, Verisurf, MCosmos, or equivalent acceptable with the ability to learn PolyWorks quickly).
  • Excellent understanding of GD&T (ASME Y14.5).
  • Experience designing and building holding fixtures for CMMs.
  • Proficiency with precision measuring equipment (micrometers, height gauges, and other hand tools).
  • Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance.
  • U.S. citizenship is required pursuant to contractual obligations.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Associate's degree or technical training.
  • Experience with advanced or specialized inspection methods, including NDT.
  • Experience with CT scanning and automated or large-volume 3D scanning.
  • Experience with PolyWorks|DataLoop or similar metrology data management platforms.
  • Familiarity with AS9100 or ISO 17025 quality systems.
