How much do metocean jobs pay per hour?
What are the typical daily tasks and team interactions for someone in a Metocean position?
A Metocean professional typically analyzes meteorological and oceanographic data to assess weather, wave, and current conditions for offshore projects. Daily responsibilities often include running data models, interpreting sensor outputs, writing reports, and providing recommendations for project planning and safety. Collaboration is common with engineers, project managers, and operational teams to deliver accurate forecasts and risk assessments. This role is both independent and team-oriented, offering a dynamic environment that balances analytical tasks with regular communication and project coordination. Effective Metocean work directly contributes to the safety and efficiency of marine operations.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Metocean position, and why are they important?
To thrive in a Metocean role, you need a strong background in oceanography, meteorology, and data analysis, typically supported by a relevant degree in science or engineering. Familiarity with metocean software tools, remote sensing technology, and data modeling platforms is highly valuable, as is experience with industry certifications such as GWO or IMCA. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help metocean professionals interpret complex data and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams. These competencies ensure accurate environmental assessments and support decision-making in offshore and marine projects.
What is a Metocean job?
A Metocean job involves analyzing and predicting meteorological (weather) and oceanographic (sea conditions) data to support offshore industries like oil and gas, renewable energy, and marine operations. Professionals in this field study wind, waves, currents, and other environmental factors to ensure safe and efficient project planning and execution. Their work helps guide engineering design, operational safety, and risk management for offshore installations, vessels, and subsea infrastructure.

This collaborative, primarily office-based role includes preparing reports, graphics, and calculations while supporting permitting, construction review, and project delivery.
You'll contribute to projects such as beach nourishment, inlet studies, and coastal structures, while mentoring junior staff and serving as a client-facing technical resource. This role is based in Jacksonville, FL, with consideration for candidates in the South Florida (Palm Beach County) area and a future in-office expectation.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Work closely with Project Managers, technical staff, and clients to prepare/review technical approaches and proposals for projects and/or coastal engineering tasks supporting large multi-disciplinary projects
- Apply numerical modeling tools to analyze coastal and riverine systems. This includes wave dynamics, hydrodynamics, sediment transport, and shoreline or seabed morphological change in support of a broad range of engineering efforts
- Complete end-to-end numerical modeling projects, from data collection and preparation, model development and testing, to post-processing of results. Produce clear visual model outputs such as figures, animations, and technical deliverables including reports and presentation materials
- Prepare construction documents, including engineering drawings and technical specifications
- Develop permit applications and supporting documents
- Participate in high-level communication efforts with clients from proposal phase to project completion phase, as a technical expert
- Make formal and informal presentations to both technical and lay audiences
- Build and facilitate teamwork among members across all disciplines and levels, with a focus on numerical modeling of coastal and riverine systems
- Mentor and support the development of junior technical staff
- Develop and continuously improve standard work practices
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in coastal, ocean, civil, or environmental engineering
- 5+ years of experience in coastal engineering, including 2+ years with process-based models (e.g., MIKE21/3, Delft3D, ADCIRC, XBeach)
- Experience with MATLAB or Python for model pre/post-processing
- Experience with wave mechanics and coastal sediment transport projects
- Experience with beach nourishment and technical report preparation
- Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification required
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree or PhD in coastal, ocean, civil, geotechnical, or environmental engineering
- 8+ years consulting experience in coastal/marine projects
- Professional Engineer (or ability to obtain within ~10 months)
- Experience with metocean analyses, coastal structure design, and additional models (SWAN, STWAVE, GENESIS/GENCADE, WAVEWATCH III, SWASH, SLOSH, etc.)
