What are the typical daily tasks and team interactions for someone in a Metocean position?

A Metocean professional typically analyzes meteorological and oceanographic data to assess weather, wave, and current conditions for offshore projects. Daily responsibilities often include running data models, interpreting sensor outputs, writing reports, and providing recommendations for project planning and safety. Collaboration is common with engineers, project managers, and operational teams to deliver accurate forecasts and risk assessments. This role is both independent and team-oriented, offering a dynamic environment that balances analytical tasks with regular communication and project coordination. Effective Metocean work directly contributes to the safety and efficiency of marine operations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Metocean position, and why are they important?

To thrive in a Metocean role, you need a strong background in oceanography, meteorology, and data analysis, typically supported by a relevant degree in science or engineering. Familiarity with metocean software tools, remote sensing technology, and data modeling platforms is highly valuable, as is experience with industry certifications such as GWO or IMCA. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help metocean professionals interpret complex data and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams. These competencies ensure accurate environmental assessments and support decision-making in offshore and marine projects.

What is a Metocean job?

A Metocean job involves analyzing and predicting meteorological (weather) and oceanographic (sea conditions) data to support offshore industries like oil and gas, renewable energy, and marine operations. Professionals in this field study wind, waves, currents, and other environmental factors to ensure safe and efficient project planning and execution. Their work helps guide engineering design, operational safety, and risk management for offshore installations, vessels, and subsea infrastructure.

Job description

Overview

CSA Ocean Sciences Inc. (CSA) is expanding its metocean capabilities to strengthen its global oceanographic data acquisition, processing, and delivery services. CSA is seeking a seniorโ€‘level professional to lead and support operational execution, equipment management, and data workflows associated with physical oceanography and metocean projects. This role is focused on buoy system management, field operations, instrumentation, and data quality, working in close coordination with CSAโ€™s project scientists and technical teams.

Position Summary

The Oceanographic Mooring Deployment Specialist is a senior technical and operational lead responsible for planning and overseeing oceanographic and metocean buoy deployments, instrumentation workflows, and associated data delivery. The role combines handsโ€‘on field leadership with technical decisionโ€‘making authority across equipment selection, deployment strategies, and data quality assurance, working in close collaboration with project scientists, project managers, and commercial teams.

This position serves as CSAโ€™s lead specialist for mooringโ€‘based metocean operations, providing subjectโ€‘matter expertise throughout the project lifecycleโ€”from proposal development and operational planning through deployment execution, data processing, and final reporting. The role is accountable for ensuring that field operations and data workflows are scientifically defensible, operationally efficient, safe, and aligned with contractual and client expectations. Domestic and international travel and time at sea are required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, fabrication, deployment, recovery, and lifecycle management of oceanographic and metocean systems
  • Plan and oversee metocean field operations, including mobilization, deployment, recovery, and demobilization
  • Install, calibrate, operate, maintain, and troubleshoot oceanographic and metocean instrumentation
  • Provide senior technical and operational input to commercial proposals, including scope development, equipment selection, logistics planning, schedules, and cost estimates related to buoy systems
  • Oversee data acquisition, postโ€‘processing, QA/QC, analysis, and reporting of metocean datasets in collaboration with project scientists
  • Develop, implement, and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) for field operations, instrumentation, and data workflows
  • Coordinate with project managers, scientists, and clients to ensure timely delivery of data products that meet contractual, scientific, and quality requirements
  • Ensure compliance with health, safety, and security requirements, company policies, and client safety standards during all operational activities

Required Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience in the design, fabrication, deployment, and recovery of oceanic metocean mooring systems
  • Five (5) or more years of experience in metocean or oceanographic operations, including offshore fieldwork
  • Strong knowledge of marine field operations, instrumentation deployment, equipment logistics, and operational risk management
  • Proven ability to lead field activities, make sound operational decisions, and resolve technical challenges in dynamic environments
  • Demonstrated attention to data quality, documentation, and QA/QC throughout acquisition and processing workflows
  • Effective written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to work independently and in multidisciplinary teams
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, etc.)
  • Valid driverโ€™s license and ability to meet company driving requirements
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a TWIC card
  • Willingness and ability to travel domestically and internationally and work at sea
  • Strong commitment to personal and team safety, including completion of required safety training and medical assessments

Desired Qualifications

  • Advanced university degree or equivalent technical experience in a STEMโ€‘related field (e.g., Oceanography, Meteorology, Geosciences, Earth Engineering, Geomatics, or related discipline)
  • Experience developing or refining operational procedures, field manuals, or SOPs for marine operations or data workflows
  • Experience supporting proposal development, cost estimation, and technical planning for metocean or oceanographic projects
  • Foreign language skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with multinational teams and international clients

Applicants must possess current, longโ€‘term authorization to work in the United States.
CSA is unable to initiate visa sponsorship. Letters of Recommendation will be required.
