What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Metal Patina Artist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Metal Patina Artist, you need a solid understanding of metals, chemical processes, and artistic design, often gained through experience or formal training in metalworking or fine arts. Familiarity with tools such as spray guns, brushes, protective equipment, and knowledge of safety protocols is essential. Attention to detail, creativity, and patience are crucial soft skills for achieving consistent, high-quality finishes. These skills ensure both the artistic integrity and durability of the final product, while maintaining a safe work environment.

What are some common challenges metal patina artists face when working with different metals, and how can they be addressed?

Metal patina artists often encounter challenges such as achieving consistent coloration, dealing with unpredictable chemical reactions, and ensuring the long-term durability of the finish. Different metals (such as copper, bronze, or steel) react differently to patina solutions, requiring careful testing and adjustment of techniques. To address these challenges, artists regularly experiment with sample pieces, maintain detailed process notes, and collaborate with other artists or fabricators to refine their methods. Staying updated on new materials and safety practices also helps ensure successful and safe outcomes.

Job description

Do you find satisfaction in transforming raw materials into beautifully finished surfaces? Are you someone who combines creative instinct with a disciplined, methodical approach? Are you looking for a role away from a desk, where hands-on tactile work is valued?

We're looking for a mature, quality-driven individual to join our team as a Metal Finishing & Patina Specialist-a hands-on role with clear leadership potential in our standard products production line.

About the Role:

You'll work with a small, skilled team focused on applying patinas and finishes to metal components used across our core product lines. This is a process-oriented role where you'll:

  • Apply and refine finishes using chemical patinas, hand techniques, and mechanical tools
  • Develop and document repeatable finishing processes for consistency and quality
  • Evaluate visual and tactile finish quality with a highly trained eye
  • Help onboard and train new team members as needed
  • Contribute to a studio culture that values both craftsmanship and community

Over time, this role can grow into a supervisory position, and we're especially interested in candidates with team leadership experience in production, studio, or shop environments.

What We're Looking For:

  • Experience in metal finishing, patina work, sculpture, fabrication, or studio-based material processes
  • A strong visual sense and instinct for finish quality (e.g., color, texture, uniformity)
  • Maturity, responsibility, and an organized approach to repetitive or process-based work
  • Interest or experience in supervising, mentoring, or training others
  • Ability to thrive in a collaborative, hands-on environment

Bonus points for:

  • Past work in a production shop or high-end fabrication environment
  • Experience developing written work instructions or SOPs
  • A background in sculpture, metals, or industrial design
  • Bi-Lingual communicator
  • Experience with ERP systems, or daily use of computers for communicating, tracking, and organization

What We Offer:

  • A creative, respectful, and detail-driven work culture
  • Opportunities to grow into a leadership role
  • On-the-job training in our specific finishing and chemical processes
  • A chance to work with beautiful materials and make work you're proud of
  • Competitive pay, benefits, and a stable role in an established, growing company

Schedule:

  • 4 Day Work Week (6:30AM-5:00PM M-Th)

If you're someone who loves the marriage of art and process, who takes pride in quality, and who enjoys helping others do the same-we'd love to hear from you.
