Mes Software Engineer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an MES Software Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an MES Software Engineer, you need a strong background in computer science, programming (such as C#, Java, or Python), and manufacturing process knowledge, often supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) platforms like Siemens Opcenter or Rockwell FactoryTalk, as well as database management and integration tools, is typically required. Analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating with cross-functional teams and addressing production challenges. Mastering these skills ensures efficient system implementation, smooth integration with manufacturing operations, and the delivery of reliable solutions that drive productivity.

What is a MES Software Engineer?

A MES (Manufacturing Execution System) Software Engineer is a professional responsible for designing, developing, implementing, and maintaining software systems that manage and control manufacturing operations on the shop floor. They bridge the gap between enterprise-level business systems (like ERP) and real-time production processes, ensuring data flows smoothly and efficiently. MES Software Engineers work with technologies such as databases, PLCs, and industrial automation systems to optimize manufacturing performance, improve quality, and enable traceability. Their role often involves collaborating with production teams, IT professionals, and equipment vendors to deliver tailored MES solutions.

What are some common challenges faced by MES Software Engineers when integrating new manufacturing technologies?

MES Software Engineers often encounter challenges when integrating new manufacturing technologies, such as ensuring seamless data flow between legacy and modern systems, adapting to diverse machine protocols, and maintaining system reliability during upgrades. Collaboration with production and IT teams is essential to address compatibility and minimize downtime. Staying up-to-date with evolving industry standards and cybersecurity best practices is also a key part of the role.

Job description

Agility's commercially deployed humanoids operate alongside teams in warehouses, manufacturing facilities, and distribution centers—tackling physically demanding and repetitive tasks while enabling workers to focus on higher-value work. With industry-leading safety standards and years of proven deployment data, we're pioneering a new era of automation that enhances human potential.

About the Role

We are seeking a Senior Manufacturing Test Engineer with deep expertise in electronics, embedded systems, and production test strategy. In this role, you will lead the development and optimization of robust, scalable test infrastructure to ensure the performance, quality, and reliability of our robotic systems. You will mentor junior engineers, drive best practices across the test organization, and act as a technical liaison between cross-functional teams including Design, Systems, Firmware, and Manufacturing.

This position offers a unique opportunity to influence the design and manufacturability of cutting-edge robotic systems from early concept through high-volume production.

About the Work
  • Serve as the technical owner and architect for manufacturing test systems supporting electrical, embedded, and control subsystems across multiple product lines.
  • Define and drive automated production test strategies for embedded hardware, maximizing coverage, repeatability, traceability, and throughput.
  • Partner with Design, Systems, Firmware, and Manufacturing teams to embed Design-for-Test (DFT) and Design-for-Manufacturing (DFM) principles early in product development.
  • Own the full lifecycle of manufacturing test platforms, including requirements definition, hardware and software development, deployment, validation, and long-term sustainment.
  • Lead root cause analysis and failure investigations by analyzing test data, identifying trends, and driving corrective and preventive actions at the system level.
  • Provide technical leadership during New Product Introduction (NPI) by establishing scalable, production-ready test strategies from EVT/DVT through ramp and steady-state production.
  • Define and uphold test documentation standards, ensuring clear, maintainable specifications, procedures, and technical records for test equipment and processes.
  • Mentor and technically guide manufacturing test engineers and technicians, elevating test rigor, design quality, and engineering best practices.
  • Develop and deploy tools for test data collection, visualization, database integration, and automated reporting to support real-time manufacturing and quality decisions.
  • Ensure manufacturing test processes align with internal quality systems and applicable industry standards.
About You
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field (Master's degree preferred).
  • 7+ years of experience in manufacturing test engineering or related roles, with ownership of complex electro-mechanical or embedded system test solutions.
  • Demonstrated experience leading end-to-end test system development in robotics, automotive, aerospace, or consumer electronics manufacturing environments.
  • Strong proficiency in test software development (Python preferred), including automation, instrumentation control, and data analysis.
  • Deep understanding of embedded systems and communication protocols (I²C, SPI, UART, CAN, EtherCAT).
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and layouts; experience with ECAD tools (Altium preferred).
  • Hands-on experience designing and deploying test fixtures, harnesses, and production test stations.
  • Familiarity with Linux- or RTOS-based systems (e.g., FreeRTOS) and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing methodologies.
  • Proven ability to influence cross-functional teams through technical leadership and sound engineering judgment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly document and present complex technical concepts.
  • Strong hands-on, builder mindset—you are comfortable troubleshooting hardware and software on the factory floor.
Bonus Points
  • Experience integrating manufacturing test systems with MES, test databases, and SPC frameworks.
  • Exposure to safety-critical or regulated product development environments.
  • Background in robotics or highly integrated mechatronic systems.
