What is a memory care assistant?

Memory Care Assistants are specialized caregivers who support individuals with Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, or other memory impairments. They help residents with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, eating, and participating in cognitive activities designed to maintain or improve memory function. Memory Care Assistants also monitor residents’ health and safety, provide emotional support, and communicate with families and medical professionals to ensure personalized care. Their role is crucial in enhancing the quality of life for those living with memory challenges.

What are some common challenges memory care assistants face when supporting residents with dementia, and how can they be managed?

Memory Care Assistants often encounter challenges such as communication barriers, unpredictable behaviors, and emotional distress among residents with dementia. These can be managed by using patience, clear and simple communication, and de-escalation techniques. Building strong relationships with residents, collaborating closely with nursing staff and family members, and receiving ongoing training in dementia care are also essential strategies for effectively supporting residents while maintaining a positive and safe environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a memory care assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Memory Care Assistant, you need a background in caregiving or nursing support, knowledge of dementia care, and often a high school diploma or CNA certification. Familiarity with electronic care records, mobility aids, and safety protocols is typically required. Patience, compassion, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for building trust and responding to the unique behaviors of memory-impaired residents. These skills ensure the delivery of safe, personalized care and enhance the quality of life for residents in memory care settings.

Job description

Team members need to be at Marbridge of Cheshire and Seacrest of West Haven for our recreation and social activities in both the assisted living and memory care areas.

At both MARBRIDGE, a luxurious assisted living and memory care center in Cheshire, and SEACREST, located directly on Long Island Sound in West Haven, we offer numerous opportunities for activities, recreation, and social engagement tailored to our residents' needs. While we offer some integrated programs, we are looking for different individuals for both our general population and memory care clientele, both part- and full-time.

We accommodate flexible schedules, including full and partial days, as well as daytime and late-afternoon/early-evening shifts. This format supports part-time or full-time roles; weekend availability is essential.

Ideal candidates will demonstrate the following traits:

  • Prior experience in activities geared towards elder care or daycare services.
  • Knowledge and experience as a Personal Care Assistant (PCA) would be beneficial.
  • A vibrant, creative personality that's ready to energize and uplift.
  • Dedication to ensuring that every resident has a positive and enjoyable experience.
  • Strong interpersonal skills are a must.
  • A passion for leading craft activities, games, and stimulating discussions,
  • Facilitating book talks,
  • Initiating walking and exercise groups,
  • Incorporating exercise programs that include armchair stretching, yoga, and tai chi.
  • Coordinating celebrations, birthday parties, Friday socials, special events, and cultural festivities;
  • Managing event decorations, sending invitations, and creating a fun, joyful ambiance.
  • If you have a flair for hosting bingo, love to dance and sing, and can genuinely make individuals feel special, MARBRIDGE or Seacrest might be the right place for you!

Our approach is holistic, ensuring that separate programs are tailored for both our independent assisted living and memory care clients. We are looking for kind-hearted, compassionate individuals willing to work with either or both groups.

As an owner-operated company with four decades of experience, we welcome applications from passionate individuals.

Please forward your resume and/or work history, including your personal email address, to:

info@marbridgeweb.com or info@seacrestweb.com, or reach us at (860) 929-6999 via phone or text.

All candidates must pass state and federal background checks and drug screenings.
