ACADEMIC DEPUTY MEDICAL EXAMINER
Allegheny County, Pennsylvania | Salary: $290,000–$300,000

Advance forensic pathology education, mentorship, and academic collaboration in a leading medico-legal environment.

Allegheny County is seeking an accomplished forensic pathology professional and educator to serve as its next Academic Deputy Medical Examiner. This unique opportunity combines forensic pathology practice with leadership in medical education, fellowship and residency support, academic collaboration, and research within the Allegheny County Office of the Medical Examiner (ACOME).

Reporting to the Chief Medical Examiner or designee, the Academic Deputy Medical Examiner performs core forensic pathology duties including postmortem examinations, determination of cause and manner of death, courtroom testimony, and forensic consultation while also helping lead educational programming for medical students, pathology residents, forensic pathology fellows, and external educational partners. The successful candidate will support lecture development, curriculum initiatives, mentorship, scholarly activity, and interdisciplinary collaboration across academic and healthcare systems.

ACOME provides a highly collaborative multidisciplinary environment supported by experienced scene investigators, laboratory scientists, and ancillary specialists. The Office utilizes advanced Information Management Systems including BEAST and LIMS and provides comprehensive digital scene and examination photography resources for every case. Strong partnerships with UPMC, Allegheny Health Network, and the new College of Osteopathic Medicine at Duquesne University create exceptional opportunities for teaching, research, and academic engagement.

Minimum qualifications include:

  • MD or DO from an accredited medical school

  • Pennsylvania medical licensure at time of hire

  • Completion of residency training in Anatomic Pathology and fellowship training in Forensic Pathology

  • Board Certification in Anatomic and Forensic Pathology, or eligibility for certification through the American Board of Pathology

  • Strong teaching, communication, and collaborative skills
