What is a medical support assistant?

A medical support assistant works closely with physicians, nurses, and other medical staff to assist with administrative duties in a health care facility. As a medical support assistant, your responsibilities include collecting and documenting patient information, filing insurance claims, and scheduling patients. You may also provide support to physicians during patient examination procedures as needed. To pursue a career as a medical support assistant, you typically need a diploma or associate degree in medical assistance, as well as administrative experience. You may also pursue professional certification to demonstrate your skills as a qualified professional. Additional qualifications include basic computer, organizational, interpersonal skills, along with a solid understanding of medical terminology.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a medical support assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Medical Support Assistant, you need strong organizational abilities, attention to detail, and experience with medical office procedures, often supported by a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems, scheduling software, and medical terminology is typically required.
