Job Description
The Virginia Modeling, Analysis, and Simulation Center (VMASC) at Old Dominion University invites applicants for two open rank research faculty position specializing in Medical Modeling and Simulation to begin in Fall 2025. This is a 12 month research faculty appointment as part of a multiple position hiring initiative for Medical Modeling and Simulation. Areas of expertise for this position include, but are not limited to, the following: digital twins in healthcare, Large Language Models for medical education, evaluation and integration of AI in medicine. The members of this cluster hire will work closely with other researchers at VMASC, the Institute for Engineering in Medicine, Health, and Human Performance (EnMed) in the Batten College of Engineering and Technology, and the Sentara Center for Healthcare Simulation and Immersive Learning at Macon and Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences.
The candidate will be able to:
  • Develop an interdisciplinary and externally funded research program in medical modeling and simulation.
  • Collaborate with faculty hired in this cluster and other faculty at Old Dominion University.

  2. Candidate for associate or full research professor must have a demonstrated sustained track record of external federal funding and peer reviewed research publications.

  • Record of research funding such as fellowships or external grants, commensurate with experience.

  • A plan for developing an externally funded research program at ODU with expressed interest in leveraging complementary research expertise at ODU

The Virginia Modeling, Analysis, and Simulation Center (VMASC), established in 1997, is Old Dominion University's Office of Enterprise Research and Innovation's largest research enterprise. Located in Suffolk, Virginia, VMASC's researchers span multiple disciplines such as data science, operations research, decision analysis, social science, applied mathematics, instructional systems design, medical research, and modeling and simulation. Our researchers and project scientists work with the most advanced tools, technologies, and methods across 11 research labs and construct solutions in our 60,000 sq. ft. cutting-edge facility. Medical modeling and simulation is conducts high-impact interdisciplinary research to improve population health by developing decision-support tools with clinicians, community members, and policymakers. Through innovative combinations of large-scale simulations, machine learning and Generative AI, we provide a hub to assess the effect of proposed interventions (fairness, costs, health impacts) and analyze their implementation. The Instructional Training Systems division leads education and training research, and development focused on advanced technologies for cognition, learning and performance in applications including digital patients.
