Job Description
The Batten College of Engineering and Technology (BCET) at Old Dominion University invites applicants for an open rank tenure/tenure track position specializing in Medical Modeling and Simulation to begin in Fall 2026. This is a 10-month tenured/tenure track appointment as part of a multiple position hiring initiative for Medical Modeling and Simulation. We are seeking to hire tenured/tenure track and research faculty members to strengthen our medical modeling and simulation cluster efforts in the areas of precision medicine and patient safety. The members of this cluster hire will work closely with the Institute for Engineering in Medicine, Health, and Human Performance (EnMed) in BCET, the Virginia Modeling, Analysis, and Simulation Center (VMASC) and the Sentara Center for Healthcare Simulation and Immersive Learning at Macon and Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences.
The candidate will be able to:
  • Develop an interdisciplinary and externally funded research program in medical modeling and simulation.
  • Collaborate with faculty hired in this cluster and other faculty at Old Dominion University.
  • Teach undergraduate and graduate engineering courses in one of the five departments in the Batten College of Engineering and Technology.

Minimum required education and/or special licenses, registrations, trainings, or certifications
A Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree in engineering or closely related field, complementary to the cluster's core areas of research, by May 2026, and be eligible for an appointment in one of the academic departments in the BCET.
Minimum required level and type of experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities
  1. Candidates for assistant professor should have a record of conducting research in medical modeling and simulation as evidenced by peer reviewed publications.
  2. Candidate for associate or full professor must have a demonstrated sustained track record of external federal funding and peer reviewed research publications.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Post-doctoral research experience
  • Teaching experience as teaching assistant or course instructor, commensurate with experience.
  • Record of research funding such as fellowships or external grants, commensurate with experience.
  • A plan for developing an externally funded research program at ODU with expressed interest in leveraging complementary research expertise at ODU.
