What Does a Medical Laboratory Technician Do?
As a medical laboratory technician, your duties involve collecting and testing samples, usually for medical purposes. You work under the supervision of a laboratory technologist to operate equipment and prepare samples for use in research or in diagnosis of patients, to better determine courses of treatment. Depending on the type of lab, you may need to work with tissue, blood, or other bodily fluids. You may work with patient samples in a hospital or medical clinic or a research lab, medical diagnostic lab, veterinary laboratory, or research and development lab in a company.

| Certifications | Typically required certification (e.g., ASCP) | Required certification, often more advanced (e.g., ASCP MT/MLS) |
| Work Environment | Hospitals, clinics, diagnostic labs | Hospitals, research labs, public health labs |
| Job Responsibilities | Perform routine tests, prepare specimens | Supervise technicians, interpret results, troubleshoot |
Medical Laboratory Technicians and Medical Laboratory Technologists work closely in diagnostic labs, but technologists usually have higher education, more responsibilities, and advanced certifications.
